Question about configure Shares for the Media Server.

Ok, so I have a question about configuring shares for the DLNA server.


Ok, so I have my Javelin configured for 4 Raid 0 drives, (250gig, 3TB, 2TB, 3TB)

---------- I like the space,
---------- The movies on them are disposible,
---------- I dont want to loose everything if there is a crash
so 4 x drives running Raid 0 seems to be the best option. (unless someone says otherwise)

So now that I have explained my configuration,

My delima is: how to configure the DNLA server to allow me to put movies from multiple drives and shares.

In my current config, I have the 250 as the main drive, stupid on my part, because now I need to move things aroudn to get the space up on drive 0.

so my questions:

1 - Is there a way to have the VIDEO share from drive 0 removed so I can create a drive VIDEO share on another drive?

2 - is it possible to change the mapping in the DNLA Server to use the movie share from another drive?

3 - I have multiple Media players, but the one in the basement on the bigscreen is a PS3, and only see's the share from VIDEO. is there a way to put shortcuts in the folder? or a way to make it see more then 1 share? (any ps3 owners here?)


is there much configuration possibilities on the DNLA Server? I understand I am going to need to root the box to play at this level, and I am fine with that.

First off, RAID 0 is almost never the best option. Your last point is exactly what it's a terrible idea. RAID 0 offers no data protection at all, so if one of the drives crashes, you WILL lose everything. What I would do is create a RAID 5 array with the 3TB, 2TB, and 3TB drives. This will give you a 4TB RAID array. Use the 250GB drive as a standalone disk or just get rid of it. Set the RAID 5 array as Volume 0 and you shouldn't have issues with the DLNA server.

i know raid 0 isnt the best options, but the data isnt sensitive, its just videos. so loosing 4gig of HD space for stuff thats easily replenishable isnt my goal.

there has to be a way to modify where path to the for the plug in

I have a PS3, and (currently) use it as a playback device. I would love to help you, but your post is very weird. The DLNA service will allow any other DLNA device on the network to automatically connect, and should show up as "Javelin S4" in the video tab of the PS3. From there, select "Browse Folders" first, and navigate from there.

As ChrisTWL said, raid 0 is the wrong idea if you, as you said, "dont want to loose everything if there is a crash". RAID 5 is your best option, minus the 250gig.

I don't know why it needs to be labeled 'VOLUME 0', as mine is labeled 1, and have no probs with DLNA (as of the latest firmware).

Ok, I think I understand what you did. You set the 4 drives up as INDIVIDUAL RAID 0?
If that's the case, I can't help you, I limited my knowledge collection to RAID 5

In the past, I have used a PC to do the functionality of the PC do the same thing as the NAS, and the software I had been using, allows you to create multiple shares to different drives and different directory's.

But when you would connect to it via the PS3 Game console, it offered all the shares through to the console through he VIDEO share. basically I could have 30 HD's if I wanted with files all over the place, and it made it look like it was on the Same drive.

So, I guess what I am looking for is a way to Tell the DLNA server that dont look on Drive 1 for the video share, go look on drive 3 or 4 or ...


I understand why Raid 5 is better then Raid 0, but if you dont care if you loose a drive full of movies, and you have unlimited bandwidth. loosing 4TB of usible space doesnt make much sense.


I didnt buy the Javelin to protect Data, I bought it too be a Data storage device thats not a PC and remove managable. so its a risk I am willing to take.

Have you checked the "Media Server" section found on the "Home" page using the web interface?

Seems to me the DLNA service does exactly that, collects all the media and separates them into vids/pics/music.

Unless I am missing something. When I do the rescan, nothing shows up


I have 4 indri pendant drives each with there own shares. And the dnla server never looks past the video's in the fedora share
