It should be looked at though if others are having this problem. I used to re-apply the firmware to fix it before I found it was the date.
I never turn the power bar off, and sometimes leave the player on for days in a row. I turn it off and on with full size remote. With the old small flat remote, it would sometimes not power on and I would have to re-plug the power.
Sometimes when I power it on (with the remote) it doesn't recognize either of the usb hubs I have plugged in (not the mouse or any of the 13 thumb drives). Using the remote to power off/on fixes it in 1 or 2 tries. This just shows how unpredictable this unit is.
Other than that, it does play my video files well.
Well if you think that the problem is caused by a defective unit versus a firmware issue then you might want to look into exchanging the unit or contact Patriot RMA department and see what they can do to help you. I am guessing that you have powered USB Hubs and all those Thumb drives and not being powered by the PBO Alpine correct ??? If not your issue could be caused by a extensive power drain ???? Well maybe just throwing ideas your way.

    Cheers !!!

Well I just went back to the store to do a refund, and they didn't warrant a refund but a replacement unit. We'll see where this goes...

If this one still has the issue I'll have to spend more to issue an RMA with Patriot right?

If this one behave the same way as your previous one then I will suspect that the issue is related to firmware or harware problem on all the units. RMA usually only the fee to ship it to Patriot as long as your waranty is good.

I can confirm with near certainty that the issue is related to units not connected to the internet at large but to a local area network or no network at all. My unit is connected only to a usb drive and to a Time Capsule through ethernet, and the date reset occurs every few days for me as well. When it does, the video player does not work (force close) and the network drives becomes inaccessible. Resetting the date manually fixes the problem.

There is obviously a problem with the software regarding setting the date when an NTP server is not available.

With respect to RMA-ing the unit, I suspect that new hardware will not fix the problem (unless perhaps the new hardware has a different manufacturer stampe on the front). What RMA-ing would help solve is Patriot's refusal to even communicate with users regarding the numerous inherent flaws with these units.

So with that, I encourage all of you to RMA your unit. Maybe if enough of us do, they will begin to take notice.

Different unit...same behaviour...took me another 8 hours to repeat every single troubleshooting step I made before.

I'm a computer programmer / web developer by training and I know how hard it is to program and it takes weeks and months for a project to be completed.

I just can't throw this unit away and RMA-ing like you guys said is useless since it's going to be the same hardware and the same software/firmware installed.

I'll wait and see if Patriot addresses this issue within next week...but if not, this thread will be posted on Overclock.net/RedFlagDeals/Hardware Canucks/NCIX and other communities I am involved with.

RMA for a full refund of your purchase price. Hell, I bought mine from Amazon, which still lists the unit as including Optical Audio out. Taken verbatim from the text provided by Patriot, no less.

An hour ago I remote turned off the patriot and unplugged 1 of the thumb drives to replace some video shows.
I put the thumb drive in the same (only empty) slot in the hub and hit the on button, but in the 1'st 5 seconds I noticed the show was stuttering.
I checked the date and it was Jan 1, 1970 !!!!!
I upped the year and made it Jan 1, 2013 and restarted the video and it plays now without the stutter.
Nothing else was done, no power off or anything.
No external connection, just 2 usb hubs with lots of thumb drives and a mouse in 1 of the hub ports for doing most of the navigation.

I'm also having the date/time issue. I was thinking maybe battery but not sure how it works. In the past few months I have reset the date and time repeatedly although this really hasn't affected much since I'm barely using it, I'm waiting for a useful firmware update. This morning I installed the Pandora apk and it would not log on, after resetting the date it worked well. The date was 1982. I left the unit on for a while and seemed to maintain the correct date and time. I turned off via the remote for about 30 seconds and back on and it still had the right date and time. I cycled off and pulled the plug for about 30 seconds and then back on and the date/time advanced about 15 hours or so? I do know that if I dont reset the date and time every so often it will be years off. I haven't really been using the unit to watch movies I just surf you-tube once in a while and sometimes I preview movies I recently added to my collection via my home lan. I am using the matrix firmware and dhcp wired threw my home router. I did not notice a setting for a time server but will look again, the box does have internet access.

    thanks

I just returned back to it after a half an hour in standby and the time and date advanced about 2 weeks. I cannot find a time server setting I noticed the dns settings in the Ethernet config area are blank I will set them to my routers ip addy but this is also the gateway address..... is that right? The browser and internet type apps work fine............. DHCP?

I am not sure which NTP server that the PBO Alpine is using but since it works for me it should work for you. Does your PBO Alpine has access to the internet ???? If not this could explain why you are not getting the correct time and need to manually enter it. Make sure that your DNS server in your network is setup correctly ... in most cases it should be your router IP address. Do you still have that issue when you set the PBO Alpine network using DHCP instead of static IP ????

That's all I can think of right now.

    Good Luck!!

Is there an actual setting for a time server? if so where?
    Thanks snappy

You can not actually set a time server you must use the one that Patriot has provided; well I am sure that if you look at the android initialization files you can probably change it there but what would be the point since the one currently in the initialization process works. It is automatically use when you click the checkbox in the Date-time settings to "automatically obtain time date from network".

    Cheers !!!
