Default New Javeln media server, not sure if its borked or just missing stuff.

So it arrived yesterday, I reach out and pulled out a 500gig drive I have laying around.

Plugged in the drive and powered up the unit.

Currently with the 1 drive in,
-> it powers up and the system status stay's red for 5 minutes or so, never goes blue.
-> the network light is flashing blue/red like crazy
-> no device is registered in my DHCP list on my router.
-> when I run the dashboard, it lights up for 4-5 seconds and closes.

-> I have never had much experience with Raids, but Can I have a 500gb, 250gb, 1Tb and 3tb drive in the unit?

From what I have read on the forums so far. things I have questions about

    - will this unit work with 0 drives (should I be able to access web pages/admin)

    - do I have to have 2 drives in the unit? or is 1 enough to get it to beep.

    - Someone said if it doesnt beep, its broken. but again do I need drives in the unit for it too beep?

any insight would be much appreciated.

Not sure if it should work without any drives inside... but it should work with just one. You are able to have 4 separate drives by creating 4 RAID0 single drive arrays, one for each capacity. This will let you create different shares on each drive. Also I would not use the Dasboard utility.... this application is really hard to work with. Once the unit is "ready" I would just try to find it's IP address on your router and access it directly by typing it in your URL bar (ie http://192.168.1.115). I'm thinking the first boot-up time can be up to 15 minutes.

If I was you I would quickly open a ticket with Patriot support just so they give you other things to try.

PMchienpourri is correct. The unit will function with only 1 drive installed at RAID 0.

When you RAID, you should use similar drives to RAID or at least have similar speed (5400RPM, 7200RPM, etc) and capacity.

From my experience, the Dashboard software makes 2 things easier for the user. It automatically sets the IP and RAID for you as well as mount your Javelin folders to your PC. Other than that, I find the WEBpasm tool (Access through browser) more useful. To access your Javelin through the WEBpasm tool, you type in the IP address of your Javelin in your address bar on the browser you prefer (IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc) and it will take you to the Javelin home page. The default User name and password is Admin/Admin.

so, it would seem the problem I have been experiencing is a heating issue.

once the temperature outside dropped the box started responding, the Fan is reporting a internal temp of 50F, so if I keep the door closed it seems to boot everytime now.

and when it doesnt, if I unplug it for long periods of time, it always boots. which is fine , its going into the basement where its about 15 degrees cooler anyway.

    thanks all.

I have more questions, but I am going to make a new post.
