Default Patriot Rage 16GB keeps asking me to reformat

    I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1 on a ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe, i7 2600K, 240GB Vertex 3.

I just got the drive from Newegg today, plugged it in and it detected just fine. I noticed it was formatted FAT32 so I right clicked the drive and reformatted to NTFS, I performed a full format.

After formatting the drive and copying around 9.5GB of data to it, I ejected the drive and reinserted it. The drive would take a very long time to detect when I reinsert it. After the drive finally shows up under My Computer a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive I: before you can use it", but the drive has already been formatted!!!

So I formatted it again like it asked me to and now the drive is empty. I eject the drive and reinsert it, same message.

What's strange is that is does not happen I plug the USB in another Windows 7 x64 machine and on my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine.

When I insert the drive in those machines it shows up just fine.

    Hello,

Do you have the latest drivers applied for your Asus Z68 system? Please try updating all of the latest drivers from Asus' website.

Yes I am using the latest drivers (chipset, sata, sound, usb, network). The drivers I am using are newer than the ones available from ASUS website because I download the latest drivers directly from the chip maker.

Having the latest drivers or not does not explain why my other 3 USB flash drives work and the RAGE does not. I have a Patriot SuperSonic 32GB USB 3.0, Corsair Voyager 16GB USB 2.0 and a cheapo Wintec 1GB that all work fine.

Only the RAGE has this problem and what makes it weird is that it only happens on one of my Windows 7 x64 machines and not the others.

Maybe I need to uninstall the driver for this device? I'll have to wait and see because I already RMA'ed the drive.

    Hello,

Let me know how the replacement goes. We have seen some strange issues, and oftentimes a replacement fixes the issue.

Should I uninstall the USB driver for the RAGE before the new one arrives?

No, I would run it as-is first.

Keep the variables to a minimum, assuming it's simply the drive that was causing the issue.

Ok, I received the new drive from Newegg today in the mail. Plugged it in as is, FAT32. Still takes forever (38secs to be exact) for my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1 to detect it. Same on my Windows 7 x64 Professional SP1 as well.

I have the latest Intel Chipset driver installed, 9.3.0.1019.

I don't know what kind of cheap flash Patriot used in this drive but this is unacceptable for the price you're charging consumers.

I have a cheapo Wintec 1GB flash I got for free at a convention and that drive have been working flawlessly for over 3+ years. Plugs in and detects instantaneously and ready for use.

I also own a Patriot Supersonic 32GB USB 3.0 and that detects instantaneously. I don't know what kind of cheap flash memory or controller you guys used in the RAGE because this drive is as good as garbage to me if it takes that long to detect and be ready for use.

I found the problem: XT Rage 16GB Slow detection/Ask to be formatted

This issue with Acronis on Windows 7 x64 machines needs to be sticked and documented by forum admin.

There is something Patriot added or changed to the RAGE XT that is causing this. My SuperSonic 32GB 3.0 works fine.
