a Core-owner buddy recommended the Alpine based on his satisfaction with his unit. i don't have the heart to tell him about the Alpine!

As others have mentioned, there are much better competing products available for the same price or less. Big name companies (WD, Asus, Sony) have good devices.

What people may not realize (and I didn't until after I purchased the Alpine) is that many of the best dev team members jumped to a new company who have a few fantastic products in this space, that get updated and issues resolved much like the old PBO Core used to. I recently purchased a box from them (awaiting delivery) to replace the Alpine. I'm not sure what I'll do with the Alpine... likely the Core will still be used while the Alpine sits on the shelf. That's pretty sad.
    Which did you buy?

i still have a PBO core, love it, moved it to the bedroom to use with the new tv, no cable in the bedroom so i use it for streaming. having done that, i needed a replacement for the living room HDTV, after doing some research, i went with the WDTV Live, works well, no regrets. got it from a guy selling manufacturer refurbs on ebay, six month warranty, and saved quite a bit of money.

That is a great device, with frequent firmware upgrades -- everything the Alpine should have been.

Does anyone have any documentation or links to hack the firmware. I'm so tired of all the bugs I want to try to go at it myself.

I hope somebody does. I've got two PBO Box Office units and wanted a third - and I bought an Alpine because the older unit was no longer available. How does a company ship a newer product with less functionality than its predecessor?

There's no page forward on the remote, it doesn't remember share mounts, sometimes the clock fails and takes networking with it, and last night I found a file it won't play that the older boxes will... Then I check in here and see Patriot apparently has no interest in issuing fixes or updates. Great.

Why can't they just start selling the Box Office again?

if by that you mean quick-skip fast-forward when watching a movie, it's the reason i refuse to leave Matrix because it's the only one with that functionality.

Can one revert to a previous version? i.e. the Matrix release?

None of the firmware are incremental but overwrite the previous one therefore you can switch back in forth as much as you want without any issues.

So the answer to your question is yes.

    Cheers!!!
