Thread: Maximizing network speeds

    Lightbulb Maximizing network speeds

So before I ask my question, I'll give my setup at home.

    - Bedroom:
    - Desktop computer, which has a wired connection to my
    - Living room:
    - Patriot Box Office player, which has a wired connection to my

My desktop is wirelessly connected to the PBO via the two routers, and I have set up my network in the PBO setup so I am able to stream from it.
However, when I attempt to stream high-def 720p MKV videos, it streams at about 1 frame per every 5 seconds, so my question is - given the stats of the routers I've linked above, shouldn't I theoretically be able to stream HD videos just fine? I'm able to stream up to 1080p videos from the internet well enough..

    Hi,

I just want to understand your setup better. So you have 2 routers plugged in to your network? Are they both giving out signals?

If you are trying to stream hd wirelessly, it will give you lag. Your best bet if you want to stream hd is to plug it directly to the router which your PC is plugged into.

The Belkin router (one connected to computer & modem in my bedroom) is giving out a wireless signal, not sure about the AirStation router.. All I know is that the AirStation is acting as a wireless->wired bridge - it is taking the wireless signal from my Belkin and transmitting/translating it via ethernet cables to my Xbox & PBO.

My bedroom is too far from the living room to physically connect them to my Belkin router, which is why I am doing the wireless->wired bridge method.

Also, just an FYI no other devices/computers are using the bandwidth other than my computer & the PBO and I have nothing open on my computer.

    Bump.
Should I just replace my AirStation with a higher-end router?

Just how big and lenght of those mkv files? I have some 40 mins, 1.2 GB mkv files here that I stream wirelessly from my NAS to my PBO (USB G Wireless stick) and have no problems at all. Given the poor implementation of the wireless connection a few people when to a similar setup as yours to actually increase throughput speed vs using a Wireless USB stick. Anyhow just curious about the compression ratio of your MKV files.

    Cheers !!!

They range from 1GB (TV episodes) to 5GB (higher-end HD movies), but I have trouble even with the episodes.. I also have a Patriot USB 802.11n adapter, do you think that would be faster?
Do both my routers have the same maximum speed capabilities?

You should not have any problems streamings the 1 GB TV Episodes wirelessly; the 5 GB movies might be an issues using wireless. I would definitely try to use the USB stick to help figure out where the problem is coming from. If you can stream your TV shows (1GB) using the USB adapter than the issue would definitely be with your AirStation. As far as the maximum speed capabilities; I don't know I am not familiar with those units ... google is your friends with regards to those specification.

    Good luck!
