    Default Questions Before Buying

I'm considering purchasing a Javelin and have been doing my best to find answers to all my questions. I've got a few that I'm not clear on...

First, in the event that my Javelin suffers some sort of failure and I don't have another Javelin to drop the drives into, will it be possible to recover my data? That's assuming the drives are still functional and the file system is intact. I imagine it should be possible with a 2-disc RAID 1 array, but what about RAID 0 or 5?

Second, I'll probably start with just two drives in RAID 1 and add another two later. I know it's possible to convert a RAID 1 array to RAID 5, but is it possible to either upsize the existing array or convert to RAID 10? Can I opt to simply create a second, independent RAID 1 array?

Lastly, do Jumbo Frames have a significant effect on the Javelin's performance? I'd have to flash my router with third party firmware and I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort.

Any help would be much appreciated.

First, with RAID 0 in any storage system, if you lost 1 drive, will lost everything. So, about RAID 1/5, Javelin use a Promise controller, if you have a HW failure, theoretically, its possible to recover with another compatible Promise controller. I tried to made a RAID 5 and put a drive into another computer with Linux, there no partitions, Promise controller take all capacity without creating a partition. I think its possible to try some combinations to recover the RAID 1/5 theoretically using mdadm with Linux.

Second, convert RAID 1 to RAID 5? No! You need to destroy your RAID1 and make a new RAID 5, the same think to RAID 10. RAID 10 = RAID 0 over two RAID 1. To make the RAID 0, you will need to destroy data over the both RAID 1.
