Purchased the PBO and I like what it can do but find the UI terrible, much preferred media center on my Xbox. Is there a better interface for the PBO, or perhaps I just need to get used to it.

Well different firmware might give you a slightly different UI but overall they all work pretty much the same way since the are all build using the same SDK. The file copy is absolutely atrocious and far from being intuitive for example. Which firmware are you currently using?? You could always look here or here and here to see if any other firmware are more appropriate to you. Beware of you bootcode before you try any of these and make sure you follow the proper flash procedure.
Cheers !!!
Thanks, have the latest firmware installed, still pretty lame compared to other UI. May take a chance and install the ACRBO 5440 Euro.
Downloaded the PlayOn!X and at first glance appears to be a much nicer UI. Although the last update was in mar of 2011, so not sure if it is being supported/developed any further.

With a writable root I assume that means an installed HD. If I understand correctly a USB could be used, but once powered down the settings have to be re installed via telnet?
No writable implie the filesystem used to install the firmware; most recent PM firmware uses squashfs which is read only. Semi-official firmware uses yaffs which can be writing to. You do not need a HDD but it sure helps. Settings with HDD or USB would not be lost since most setting are writing to the /usr/local/etc directory of the player which is in flash memory. Being familar with linux is definitely an asset when you start playing around with all this stuff.

I have 4 PBO's at home and installed the Med8er firmware on to all of them because i didn't like the interface and i will say it rocks.....i especially love the video wall option
I just discovered Med8r. It looks great. I can't figure out what videowall is supposed to do. Internet radio doesn't work. I wish it didn't have the option at all if it won't work. But the general file browsing and playing is good. It even handles some .TS files that skipped on the stock PBO firmware without skipping. That's kind of weird, but I'll take it.
