Default Torqx 2 32GB -- extremely bad write performance

    Hi forum,

my Patriot Torqx 2 32GB SSD has developed extremely bad write performance figures recently, see below.

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB Benchmark (note bad write performance in right column)

    For comparison:
Corsair CSSD-F60 60GB Benchmark (same system, board and controller):

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB, 24MB/sec write speed (note high cpu load for writing the file!):

    For comparison:
Corsair CSSD-F60 60GB 56MB/sec write speed (note low cpu load!):

    Intel Sata Controller:

    AHCI driver:

    Therefore my questions:

    • What could be the reason for this bad performance?
    • Is there a firmware update for this disk? (I suppose not)
    • Is there any trim tool for this disk (that runs on Windows XP)?
    • I can dual-boot into Windows 7 from this disk. Can I do something about the low performance after booting the disk into Win7?

    Thanks already for any hints,

    David.P

Since Windows XP does not support SSD's there is nothing that will maintenance the drive. Here is a link to tweaks you can do.

If you use the drive under Windows 7, you can have TRIM and CG which Torqx 2 supports, that should assist in bring performance back.

Thank you. So is it REALLY possible that this terrible performance IS trim and GC related only, after like two months of usage?

And what do I do once Win7 is booted? Can I somehow tell the OS to "Trim and GC NOW" -- or do I have to leave the system running for any length of time in order for it to carry out trimming and GC?

    Thanks,

It really depends on how much you use the drive. After 2 months of usage is not really a good sign but again I don't know what you are doing with those drives. Go under Windows 7 and just do a write/delete of files on the drive and let your system idle over night. Disable sleep and hibernation and let TRIM take into effect.

What are you using the Torqx 2 drive for? How much of the drives capacity have you used? Also what firmware version are you on? You can checking using a program called Crystal Disk Info.

Thanks. The drive is about half full with one XP and one Win7 (test) partition. The one with XP is used as normal system drive with lots of Firefox (Portable) usage.

Actually, I have been running (other) SSD's under XP for some years 365/7/24 (unaligned and untrimmed) with no problem whatsoever.

For instant trimming in Win7, what about using this tool:

    Thanks

OK, I went into Win7 today and ran that trimming tool. Not sure whether the tool actually did anything. However, after a while the numbers for the Torqx 2 drive became somewhat better -- although still far from being satisfying. What's more, the same drive is much slower in XP than in Win7, as can be seen from below benchmarks:

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB AS SSD Benchmark (Win7, Partition C):

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB AS SSD Benchmark (XP, Partition C):

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB AS SSD Benchmark (Win7, Partition H):

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB AS SSD Benchmark (XP, Partition H):
    (screenshot missing)

    Patriot Torqx 2 32GB ATTO Benchmark (Win7, Partition C):

    Patriot Torqx 2 32GB ATTO Benchmark (Win7, Partition H):

Honestly, why is this drive so terribly slow, and even more so in Windows XP, even after trimming it in Win7?

    Thanks,

That drive is not terrible slow. You do know the read and write performance for the 32GB Torqx 2 drive is?
    Sequential Read: up to 270MB/s*
    Sequential Write: up to 230MB/s*
    *ATTO results

In Windows 7 the performance is dropped a bit because you have things like TRIM running in the background. I am actually surprised with the numbers you got in Windows XP. When you have the drive filled performance will degrade a bit as more of the capacity is filled.

Well but the 4k-speeds are VERY low -- the Corsair 60Gig drive is about 10 times (!) faster (in XP, that is).

And the read speed from ASSD in XP (29MB/s) is also not good at all.

Can you run Crystal Disk Mark in Windows XP?

    Here's the benchmarks from CDM:

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB CDM Benchmark (XP, Partition C):

Patriot Torqx 2 32GB CDM Benchmark (XP, Partition H):

    for comparison
Corsair CSSD-F 60GB CDM Benchmark (XP, Partition F):

I'd still say, the Torqx IS terrible. The Corsair is six to twenty times (!) as fast in writing data blocks.

I'm getting tired of the Torqx. Gonna throw it out and get another Corsair, or Vertex.
