Thread: How do I get my harddrives to show up?

ok, it seems that no matter what I do 2 of my 4 harddrives do not show up and can not be opened, I have the shortcuts on my desktop for them but when I click on the harddrives that keep disappearing they can not be opened, I get the error message about the drive path not being there. I have these 2 harddrives in the hotswapable bay in the bottom front of my PC case just for ease while I'm sorting this problem, it doesn't matter where I put them though I still have the same trouble. But if I slot the 2 missing harddrives out and back in, just enough to disconnect and reconnect them, I hear the harddrives faint click and they start up, and then go into my Device Manager and Scan for Hardware changes and the 2 harddrives show up and are fine, I can then use them as normal to copy stuff onto or play from. But when I turn off my PC they then disappear again, why is this, I can not solve this, what is wrong, I need some help here, you mention the SATA drives but what do I do about them?, Vista says all my Drivers are up to date, the SATA motherboard drivers from my motherboard disc- can I uninstall them and download new ones and install them?, but how do I go about uninstalling them, is it just as any other drivers?, remove the old ones and install the new ones, I'm worried that uninstalling the motherboard SATA drivers will cause me not to be able to boot up, hhhmm, maybe not I guess then.

me again!, you must all be laughing at my posts by now, one minute I think I have solved the problem and the next I haven't, well guess what, I think I have fixed it for real this time, what was I saying about I think it is a setting that is wrong and not faulty hardware as sometimes the harddrives that are missing from Vista do show up and work after I slot them out and in my hotswap bay. Anyway I went into my bios to turn off Cool and Quiet and of course had to have another look at the harddrive settings and I think I the problem was being caused by a RAID setting being on for SATA some of the SATA ports. So I changed the setting and booted up, and my harddrives were all showing up right away, so I rebooted again to double check and yes they all show up. I'm going look now to see if they all show up in the BIOS, be right back!...

Red face It was a wrong BIOS setting all along!!!!!

[QUOTE=F1REM0UTH;42602]me again!, you must all be laughing at my posts by now, one minute I think I have solved the problem and the next I haven't, well guess what, I think I have fixed it for real this time, what was I saying about I think it is a setting that is wrong and not faulty hardware as sometimes the harddrives that are missing from Vista do show up and work after I slot them out and in my hotswap bay. I'm going look now to see if they all show up in the BIOS, be right back!.. At last!!!, ALL of my 4 harddrives are showing in my BIOS and after starting Vista ALL of my 4 hardrives are showing in Vista. So it was a wrong harddrive setting in my BIOS, I was thinking this all along but the settings are kind of confusing, well they are when you are new to this stuff, and I didn't like messing around to much in case I made it worse. The manual is not so helpful either, it's only useful if you understand it all in the first place!, another case of I not being patient and calm and taking my time to read and look at things correctly in the BIOS, it was just a setting I was over looking everytime, due to me not understanding what means what. So now on to the next problem, lol...

    Red face

No wonder no one could give me any advice on what I could do, I think Ben tried his best to help but was probably at loss as what to say to me, I can understand why now, as all it was was a simple change setting in the BIOS, I had selected a RAID setting by mistake, their seems to be so many settings at first when it is all new to you, and it is hard to make out what is what, I'm learning. Thanks for support.

    Thumbs up Happy Days!

Yes, all my harddrives are working this morning as they should be, I have definitely solved this problem now. It was as I said above a wrong BIOS setting that was greyed out and I just kept over looking it. Happy Days!.
