Thread: Occasional Freezes

    Default Occasional Freezes

Am I the only one having to do a hard reset of the unit every couple of days?

Most commonly it happens when I try to turn it off with the remote - the picture disappears but the light stays green, and it won't respond to further presses of the power button. A few times it has also frozen when navigating the menus or playing a video (for instance today I was playing a video and accidentally pressed the 'option' button - The picture instantly froze, the sound played for a few more seconds then stopped).

This has happened across various firmwares - I was previously using a custom third-party firmware and it was even worse (more freezes during playback). Now I'm back on the official stream and it's mostly just the power-off freezes (observed in P61R1, P61R3, P70R1, P70R2).

I'm thinking it must be a hardware defect. I'm on bootcode 27 by the way, updated with a serial cable.

Have you ruled out heat related issue ?

I once had this problem (hanging on shutdown) while playing with firmwares and it wasnt heat related, it was a process that wasn't terminating, just like a hanging PC.

I suggest you do a clean install to the firmware of your choice (downgrade to P02 first).

Also when shutting down, make sure you have stopped playback and are on the home screen (as opposed to being on a network drive listing).

    Best of luck,
[*]Still new..? check the wiki. [*]Your shares gone for no reason ? Create a machine shortcut. [*]Trashing the G-adapter? upgrade cheaply to N. [*]Getting the hang of it? get organized .. add share shortcuts. [*]Getting sick of it ? it never hurts to rant here [*]Wishing for the time machine? give your PBO a makeover. [*]Bricked it while doing so ? unbrick it for $5[*]Not into cross flashing? keep it semi-official [*]Too lazy to read all that ? you asked for it.[*] Thank U PBO

I don't think it's heat related because I've had some freezes when it was first turned on.

I have gone to P02 and back since the freezing started, it didn't help.

Going to the home screen before shutting off is a good idea, I'll start doing that and see if it helps. In fact I'll program it into my remote so I don't forget.

    Thanks for the ideas.

Sorry for the double-post but I just re-read what you said about the hanging process... were you able to actually see that in action, maybe with the serial cable?

I'm bumping this as I'm still having freezes. I've tried flashing P02 three times in a row then going back to P70R2. Also, I sometimes get freezes when browsing network shares or when streaming a video from the network (after playing for about 1 minute). Still averaging roughly one freeze every 2-3 days of normal use.

I was wondering, would it be worthwhile to update the bootcode again? Is it possible to go back to an earlier bootcode? That's the only other thing I can think of to try.
