Default BD-Rom Drives ~ Read speed or Cache?

    Which is more important?

    Cache or read speed?

I am looking at these two drives. One has 12x but on 2Mb cache whereas the other is 10x with 4Mb cache.

Since its only 2x different go with the cache so if you have a slower feed on it that you have double the buffer before it empties. Really doesn't matter so much for rom drives unless you have a poor performing usb device (cough cough)

Speed makes a difference during "copy" operations and not playback, also note that this is a BD-ROM, and that PBO isn't compatible with retail BR/DVD.

So if its mainly for BR-D playback purposes, why not consider the cheaper Lite-on ? ($40 after MIR and free shipping code)

What do you mean by "Speed makes a difference during "copy" operations and not playback."? Are you talking about copying a blu-ray disc to a HDD?

I have no need to write BD-R but only a need to archive my blu-ray collection to my HDD. This won't be connected to my PBO but rather installed in my computer. I also don't need a Blu-Ray drive for playback because I have a stand-alone player in my HT.

Then I would say go with the faster speed regardless, 12x should give you 20% faster copying rates over the 10x drive.
The cache should not make much impact when you are reading from the optical disc and writing to your hard disk drive, its the other way around that matters, and in your case cache would make a difference using the DVD writing functionality which is apparently not your primary interest.

I searched the specifications on the manufacturer's web sites and found that they both read dual layer BD-ROM at 8x so maybe the LG is the better deal as most, if not all, of my collection is dual layer.
