Default Unit will not startup, connect to the network or register hdds

I have had this drive unit for almost a year, raid 1, without any problems. Suddenly without upgrades to the bios or any changes to the device in any way, it refuses to boot up properly.

I can hear the drives spinning up, but none of the indicator lights apart from the power light come on. I neither registers as being connected to the router on the router itself or in my network neighbourhood.

I have shut it down, and restarted it as indicated in other posts.

I'm slightly concerned as it seems to be totally KO.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

Try powering down the NAS (Unplug from power) and remove the drives. Then power up the nas without the drives.

If it still doesnt spin up, then it will probably need to be RMAd. They have a 2 year warranty, just go to Support and setup a ticket.

Your lack of planning is not an emergency on my part.

Thanks, tried that without success. Will look into the warranty options. It may be more difficult as I bought the unit in Australia, but have subsequently relocated to Singapore.

Being as the drive format is not a proprietary one, I should be able to simply pop the drives into another unit or similar product shouldn't I?

Its not proprietary, but it is a bit arcane. If you went with raid, you will need to manually set the array up if you want to mount the drives on a linux computer. If you just slap them into another valkyrie (keep the drives in the right order) it should just boot up mostly normal as long as they are running the same firmware. You'll have to reconfigure the IP address though.

Other units are probably NOT compatible, without modifications to the partition structure of the drives. Not recommended.

Thank you for your help BadIntentions.

Sadly having contacted the local Patriot Partner here in Singapore it turns out that no-one here supplies these units.

I guess my best bet is to try the linux option, and switch to another make of nas which is more readily available in the various contries I am likely to find myself.

Could you point me in the direction of the setup considerations in order to setup the raid1 array on a linux machine in order to mount these drives.

    Thanks again

raid 1 makes it easy, just connect one of the drives to a pc and boot linux using a livecd such as DamnSmallLinux(DSL). Open a root console, and type this in: 'mdadm --assemble --scan'

    More info here.
