Default Wireless problem with shared key password

    Hi All,

    Having trouble with wireless.
My d'link router is WEP security protected.
When i choose infrastructure Ap, I can see my network. I selected my network and it ask for a shared key password but only shows 0 -9 and the letters A to F.
my shared key has more letters in it (ie s, m, n etc).
Meaning i cant type in my shared key?

Am i doing something wrong? sorry if this is a stupid question.

    Btw, connecting by cable works.
Also, im running Win7 32bit and tried all the steps in that sticky "connect to Windows 7 PC w/o login work around" which is how i got the wired working.

    Thanks in advanced!!

Set your D-Link to use hexadecimal keys (should be a checkbox in the same page where you can set the key).

By the way, might want consider dropping WEP all together and use WPA. WEP is as good as no security at all when it comes to securing your wifi network.

You can also use that table to convert your characters to HEX number. For examples if your password is "hello" then enter the following: "68656C6C6F" h=68 e=65 l=6C and o=6F.

    Cheers !!!

    Thanks, guys,

I actually changed the security to WPA on your advice.
I'm able to connect into the network but....
when i put in the user id and password, the login fails. user id and password is the same as my win7 login and password right?

    any thoughts?

Snappy, I have as mentioned in my first post.

The weird thing is, i have no problem with this issue using the wired connection.
The user id and password works with the wired, but not with the wireless.....

    i dunno?

Are trying to enter the user id and password to connect to a shared folder after a successfull wireless connection or when you are trying to connect to the Wireless network?

where are you putting the user id and password?

I think you need to set it to HEX on the router.
