DVD Encode Question

I have been backing up my DVD's on my PBO which I installed a 1TB HDD and I have a wireless N network setup on. The problem is that some of my videos have audio out of sync with the movies. I've been using DVDFab 8 and converting my videos to AVI. I tried MKV but they seem to be worse for the audio sync thing. Is there a better software to use for this (any suggestions?) or a better format that will keep my audio from becoming not synced with my video? any help appreciated, thanks

Why would you convert DVDs to AVIs, anyway? You can rip your movies to ISOs, which is an easy and reliable method. I have more than 2000 titles in my collection and I've never had any issues with out of sync video/audio. If you like, you can use Handbrake for compressing the movies. MKV should be an excellent choice. Do these problems occur when playing back movies over the wireless network? Is your transfer rate high enough on the wireless?

I'm playing them back off the internal hard drive. It's a 1TB 5900 RPM 300MB/s transfer rate Hard drive. I tried ripping a DVD to an ISO but when it I tried to play it it would just loop the menu over and over again. What program do you use to create your ISO's if you don't mind me asking? Thanks
- PS Oh yeah, I've been ripping them with handbrake also, I do get better results with handbrake.

For DVDs I still use the good old combo AnyDVD + DVDShrink. If you want to keep the menus, you don't need Shrink. Just rip the DVD to an ISO image. The PBO fully supports menu navigation for DVD images. Ho do you connect audio to your receiver? Do the ISOs play well on the PC?

I just have the PBO connected via HDMI cable to my plazma TV. I am now trying to make some ISO formats with Magic Disk and I'll let you know how those come out. Do you know if this unit supports UIF images or is it just ISO's? Does the ISO images have to go into the image folder to work or can I put them in the movie folder also? I use dvdshrink to pull the main title and english subtitle out of most movies and if that doesn't work I use dvdfab ripped to folder and then point dvdshrink to the folder and then it converts to iso package very fast. I then use handbrake with a friend's custom python 3 script to do all the isos I have sitting in a predefined folder that dump the completed mkv to a specific location and relocate the iso to a backup location after it completes the mkv. Has worked flawless for me and never been out of synch as well as has english subtitles in place in case there are any forced ones during the movie.

I am now trying to make some ISO formats with Magic Disk and I'll let you know how those come out.

If your DVD's are retail, the ISO's created with Magic Disk wont work, because you need a program that will "de-protect" the DVDs while copying them. Thus the need to use AnyDVD.

Hi again,

the PBO will read ISOs, no matter where they are on your HD. I don't know a thing about UIF images. Sorry, can't help here. For test purposes you should grab the demo version of AnyDVD and give it a try. Just to make sure, that there's nothing wrong with your setup (HDMI connection etc.)

Keep in mind that CPU horsepower is crucial for re-encoding. If you have, like me, a relatively slow duo core cpu re-encoding can be very time-consuming. Since HDs are very cheap, I don't care too much about file size and usually don't re-encode at all.

However, MKVs are great for DVDs, but not so great for Blu Rays, in my humble opinion. Too much trouble with subs. Actually, the MKV format does not support PGS subs. That's a no-go for me. I stay with M2TS and have never ever had any issues.

Well, I DVD fab'ed a couple of my retail DVD's and then put them into ISO format and they worked perfectly but of course took up 4.3 GB of space on my HDD. I found out that PBO doesn't support the UIF image. Since I've started using handbreak to rip to MKV instead of DVD fab I haven't had any problems with video and audio out of sync. Handbreak works really fast on my AMD 6 core CPU what I've been doing is ripping them down to a folder on my computer and then using MS synctoy to send the files to the PBO over my wireless N network. It seems to be working great. Thanks for all the help guys.

Yup, DVD fab removes DVD protection just like AnyDVD.
