Attempting to upgrade to firmware p05 on a pbo that does not have bootcode 18 (or higher) will brick your device.

Bootcode 20 has been alluded to on the Patriot's PBO product page and nowhere else. Perhaps later model pbo's are shipping with bootcode 20. Perhaps it is a typo.

But that fits nicely in the cheapo scheme of the PBO, after all we all opted to cheap out and get the PBO (even at $135 MSRP) over a real trouble free media player *cough* PCH *cough* which was double or triple that price (at that time), expecting a DYI at every corner just comes pre-packed.

But seriously, PM has nothing to do with the firmware or the bootcode release, realtek has released it, and is supposed to so dramatic that it wont work on the older bootcode, so they could have either not released the new firmware (not that any one was waiting for it), or release it and give you the option to either do it yourself (by making the bootcode available) or send it to them to do it for you (thus RMA). Either cases its your call at the end of the day, but I personally think that *stable* upgrades is much better than no upgrades at all (regardless of the inconvenience it might bring with it).

May I ask what will be the advantages to BC 20 -- if it advances the functionality of the PBO - I'll be the 1st in line to possibly brick my PBO

The advantages of going to BC 20 from BC 18 is the same as the the advantages of going to BC 18 from BC 16 ... 20-18 = 18-16 = 2

How do you know if you bricked your PBO? I didn't check my bootcode before I installed Firmware 05 and now the furthest I can get is to the Black Box Office screen, the green USB light doesn't come on anymore when I put the flashdrive in and I can't turn the PBO on without flipping the reset switch in the back or unplugging it and plugging it back in. (The remote doesn't work).

Can I assume I bricked it? Anything else I can do?
