Therefore unless the cable is connected to the PBO you should not read any voltages on those pins except maybe for the TX line (beware that even though the TX line is a data stream with a multimeter you would probably still see 3.3 V on that line or possibly slightly lower 3.28 (Averaging)). Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying???? I don't know???

    Good luck
Based on your reiteration of the VCC-as-input-not-output, I reconfigured the cable (lead that measured 3.4V with ground went to RX pin, lead that was there was left disconnected), and... it worked! Sort of. Anything I type is not echoed back correctly, but it is received correctly by the unit. So I was able to "erase -m" and test every firmware for bootcode 16 via USB. So my unit is unbricked! Thanks everyone!

Since generating input on the serial cable corrupts the output, I decided not to upgrade the bootcode at this time. Of course, the reason I tried upgrading in the first place was due to a MKV playback issue, which is not fixed with the P61 I am using now, but I can always use mkWDclean, I guess.

flying, I was unbricking a HornetTek (I also have a PBO) and the hardware is the same. Check out the photos of the unit on the forums or here and if it's the same, you can decide to take a risk! (Nothing is without risk. I was bricked so there was nothing to lose.)

If you're in Chicagoland and need to borrow my really poor cable to do "erase -m" let me know!

At the step "IV. Bootcode update (under 5 minutes)", Can I switch on to power on the PBO ? Because, I did not see anything on Hyper Terminal and the LED of the PBO still off.

You press/repeat ESC as you turn the unit on; as soon as the unit turns on (and LED lights up), you should see text coming across the serial connection, assuming everything is wired/configured properly.

Thank you. I had done with text coming on Hyper terminate , but I can not enter to Monitor mode when I press 'ESC' and I can not type something. Please help me. I am a newbie.

    @ifone2006

Almost there .... double check your connection from your computer transmit TX line and the PBO receive RX input and make sure you have a good connection. If you keep on seeing text flying by on the terminal screen once you press "esc" then the PBO has not entered the rom monitor shell. You obviously have the TX line from the PBO connected on the right pin to see what you displayed on your post.

    Cheers !!!

i Just finished reading from 1-53....I see multiple situations.

I have a few of Hornetteks. I bricked on of mine by upgrading from the website firmware. The way i Unbricked mine is by doing the SW3/paperclip method. You touch SW3 thru a hole with the tip of the paperclip and lean it to touch the frame of the unit. have the firmware 16 bootcode in the usb in and turn on your unit. wait about 15/20 seconds and it will force the unit upgrade the firmware thru usb.

Now. i want to upgrade from 16 to 18+ bootcode. Would it be easy to run the TTL with XP? I have:

Can someone guide me with a link of a successful outcome with this usb ttl?
    Thanks

Not really sure what you are asking here; are you looking for a usb to ttl converter or the procedure to update the bootcode???

need the procedure from bootcode 16 to bootcode 18,23, or 27.

I have the Usb to TTl Converter. it has 6 pins. RST, 3V3, 5V, TXD, RXD, GND.

the RX, TX, VCC, GND on PBO.....the VCC goes with RST, 3V3, or 5v?

Im following another thread with step by step method. Just a little confusing. I just need the right connections. I dont know if trail in error will fry my PBO. So right now i do not want to take a chance.

    Thanks.

You may or may not require the VCC line from the PBO; this is actually a voltage of 3.3 V to power your USB to TTL converter. If your USB to TTL converter uses the power of the USB to do it's stuff then there are no need to connect the VCC line from the PBO. Other than that you only need the GND, Rx and tx line connected. Mixing the RX and TX line probably won't cause any damage it just won't work.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Snappy for helping out.

I got to the Realtek> Command line

    but....could not:

    - Connect your PBO to your computer Ethernet port and manually assign an IP address and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 to that port

I think i'm using the incorrect ip address from my PBO and Computer.

I could erease the existing Firmware. but having problems tranfering the .bin bootcode 18.

Im using the Putty and tptpd (not sure if running properly). I see a ip address on there. I put the .bin/audio/video/bootcode 0018.bin in the tptpd root folder that i ran the .exe.

I'm on Windows 7 x64 bit. I'm not savy on the IP stuff. I feel i'm close. I check the Ipconfig and found my Ipv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway addresses.

I also found the Ethernet Ip address in the ipconfig. Do i still need to manually change it?

    Thanks
