Default Help Please: Wireless N Adapter Problem

    Hi guys,

I bought a Wireless N USB Adapter ... specifically the Linksys WUSB600N. I popped it into the PBO and nothing happened ... no "Wifi Plug-In" notification ... no indication that it is working under the "Network" tab. Have a chosen an incompatible Wireless N Adapter?

I had been using the Wireless G Patriot adapter, but wanted to upgrade just to improve my wireless signal strength. I have the most recent PBO update (#4).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

I can relate to the frustration. The first wireless adapter I ordered at the same time as I ordered the PBO turned out not to be compatible.
Only certain adapters with certain realtek chips are known to work with the PBO.
There is a LONG thread posted in a sticky on this. Yet another thread ready to be summarized with a new sticky and an archive link.
    Happy reading
Anyone know of a third party WIFI/WRLS USB stick that works with the Patriot Box?

    Default Realtek 1073DD chipset

You need an N stick that uses a Realtek 1073DD chipset

I never tried my WUSB600N because Linksys told me it uses an Intersil Prism chipset

The Linksys WET610N bridge works great - lots of thru-put when used with my Linksys N router - but a little pricey (I got mine from Linksys as a refurb for $55 - about 1/2 of normal price)

Or the Airlink101 Golden N adapter #AWLL6075 is a proven N stick that functions fine with the PBO - google around - you should be able to find one for around $16

The WUSB600N is a great N stick - I use 3 of them on other networked devices - but not on my PBO

    Great post gmd
Just commenting here for the sake of completeness: there are a few other compatible chipsets that work. I believe there are four of them. I am too lazy to go through that thread to find them though

To the OP, you might first consider whether or not you can hard wire your PBO to your PC as a slightly cheaper but overall faster network speed alternative. Otherwise, it seems the bridges and access points are needed to act as a buffer to prevent the stuttering with HD content. IE: to really get the wireless HD streaming to work we have to spend more than we spent on the PBO

I ordered a Zonet N NIC last week. While it does work, speeds are terrible.

If you absolutely have to use wireless, get an N access point. Newegg occassionally put a Rosewill N router with access point mode on sale for around $30.

Thanks outatouch0 -- gotta' agree - there are a few others - but like you I didn't take the time to point 'em all out -- But if you catch the Airlink N stick on sale at MeritLine "at the right time" it's as low as $10 for a very limited time - it's probably one of the lower priced N sticks available

And shawnph --- gotta' agree also - N sticks 'stink' for most any HD/ISO/m2ts files and large files of more than 25/30+Gbs
Although, I can stream most MKV files thru my Linksys N bridge -- but like outatouch0 says if you want HD content to play 'hick-up' free - try to get a wire to your PBO

I got high-def playback working wirelessly. See my last post.

Granted, it took $50 in hardware to do it.

I can't get a wire to where I need to get a wire due to the construction of my house and the fact we have slab homes in FL. When I was in TN, I could've shot a wire in from under the crawlspace. Grumble.

Nice -- what type of HD files/formats/containers are you now able to stream to the PBO - sounds interesting

I just picked up the patriot N adapter and downloaded the software. I can pull up my list of wireless networks and the one I want is showing a strength of 4 of 5 bars. When I select it, it fails with the error "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may be out of range. Refresh and try to reconnect."

    How can I solve this?

    pawpad42,

You're connecting your adapter to a PC correct? Try a hard reset on the modem and router and updating the system drivers.

Other that that the USB adapter should be plug n play. Perhaps try it in a different system to see if the issue is with the usb adapter itself. We'll be glad to replace your unit if this is the case.
