Those cables look cheap (in the YEAH, CHEAP! sense of the word) and very useful for the project at hand. Good find.

Have you actually used hyperterminal over UART? Aside from the cables, what equipment did you finally go with? Got any pictures of the setup? Or can you provide a walkthrough of connecting to the pbo this way?

Its still a work in progress .. everything is still in transit .. but I ordered this cable to be used as a usb/ttl converter.

I have also got this as well ..

I think you can now guess what I am planning to do

Once I receive the cables I will do another round of shopping for solder iron + rosin core.

    Hope that info help

Would this device also work to unbrick a PBO? I would rather get something like this than trying to assemble if from a bunch of other parts, as I am not very handy

Would appreciate some advice from the experts. Thanks!

[P.S. How do I display the image inline within the post?]

Yes this should work fine; just make sure you enable the proper voltage O/P on your board. You want 3.3 Volt not the 5.0 Volt selection. I think that's what the jumper bridge is for it should not be connected between the VDD and the TX line but between the center pin and the 3.3 Volts line. This is just a calculated guess if you have documentation on this board look thru it to make sure.

I had one like this awhile back but it didn't last very long due to stress between the board and usb connector from only casual use. Be careful, particularly when you plug/unplug it since it's not encased like with the CA42 cables which offer not only good static protection but a natural strain relief as well. On the positive side, an open design like this makes it much easier to see which wires belong where.

I was able to get the following circuit to work off the RS232 header on my motherboard. It was easy to make from spare parts and a breadboard and it worked the first time through.

Clever and quite affordable considering the small cost of the components. Did you used the VCC of the PBO to power up the cct???

And .... Where were you when I bricked my PBO way back and had to wait two weeks for my cable to come in ???????

Cheers !!! and thank you for sharing your findings.

Yes, I used the VCC from the PBO to power the circuit. I did that so that I would know that the circuit was using the correct voltage for the PBO.

I'm in process of ordering a cable for my PBO and wanted an opinion on this:

    USB-3-3V-Auto-sensing-adapter

ideally I could get one of these and not have to bother with cutting/splicing.

    thoughts?

What happened with this cable/build did you get the cable ? & if you got it did it work on your PBO ?
