According to the manual here (for the one I quoted from your post)

When using DB-UC001-A separately, if the device connected to DB-UC001-A can provide 5VDC power from mini USB port, it can work well. If not, it will not work. You should supply 5VDC from connectors to DB-UC001-A. If the device can supply 5VDC for DV-UC001-A, please don't supply 5VDC in addition.

No problem, seemed the supplied mini-usb cable will be used to provide power to the board (separately from the USB data port).

Now I just need to figure what kind of cable to be used to connect this board to the PBO serial ports pins.

use uart to fix the passwd question.
cd /usr/local/etc/
vi passwd
The first line should be:
root:x:0:0:root::/bin/sh

just delete the "x"

Then you can login in.

Maybe because I dont install the sata driver, there are a lot of "watchdog test pid 205, threshold: 50" message on hypertermial , I need print the screen for reference after I enter the vi passwd cmd.

/usr/bin/stopall
stops the DvdPlayer application and its watchdog application,
now you can see what your typing.

You need a rs-232 chip to convert serial port electronic signal to TTL signal, You only need 2 signals TX and RX to connect with PBO.
I use 9pins cables connect to my little uart board, this board has a rs232 chip to convert the singal level. From this board I connect it with PBO with 3 signals, TX,RX and GND. For the uart board need independ +5V DC power supply.

An old audio cable that have been used on cd/dvd drives installed in pc's are a perfect fit for the UART port on ASUS O!Play and supposed to be perfect for the pbo.

Those cables look cheap (in the YEAH, CHEAP! sense of the word) and very useful for the project at hand. Good find.

Have you actually used hyperterminal over UART? Aside from the cables, what equipment did you finally go with? Got any pictures of the setup? Or can you provide a walkthrough of connecting to the pbo this way?
