while this is technically not false, currently there is no such program on the market. there are several reasons for this. one is that there is no standard api for determining where data is physically located on the nand. because of this, the defragmentation program would need to know the exact model and firmware revision of the ssd it's trying to 'optimize' because lba to nand translation can vary from controller to controller and even from firmware to firmware. the program would need to know the exact translation algorithms, and this is proprietary information that ssd controller manufacturers do not make available to the public. in effect, by trying to 'optimize' the ssd, this theoretical defragmenter would be overriding what the ssd controller does. never going to happen.

no defragmentation program available knows where data is located on the nand. period. diskeeper and perfectdisk even state that all their 'ssd optimizers' do is consolidate free space at the file system level (you may have to dig deep to find this admission on their web sites!).

Those who do not want to spend the money on PerfectDisk or Diskeeper with Hyperfast CAN image their SSD, secure erase it, then restore it to consolidate free space once in a while.
it's not necessary for anyone to spend money on a program to consolidate free space. windows 7 and probably vista can do just free space consolidation if you type 'defrag [drive]: /x' at the administrator command prompt.

even better, download a freeware defragmenter like defraggler or mydefrag, they can both do free space defragmentation only.

I can not get this firmware upgrade to work. I am using Windows 7, and Asus P6t deluxe Ver 2 mobo, but it doesn’t support a floppy drive. I have a USB flash drive, but so far, I can not get it to boot with the downloads that Patriot gave us. It’s getting to the point where I will have to bring it in somewhere and have somebody else do it. It’s the M-28/256. I reformatted, and am ready to go, but I can’t do it. I am aware of the settings necessary in the mobo to set up the flash to boot, but it just doesn’t work. I have tried a utility that you use in conjunction with the win-7 install disk.I got that to work, to get in to Windows, but I can’t get it to take me to flash the firmware. Oh and Majic-man, THANK YOU for everything on this thread, but can you re-post the utility for converting a usb flash to boot. The link is broken. I’m sure that I am the problem with this.

Default WINSXS moveable and One other Thing.

    Hello,

First off hat's off to the magicman. Your thread helped me a lot. But I have 2 questions. 1: With the use of a junction could I move winsxs to it's own partition? 2: After following your junction tutorial. A lot of my icons for my programs executable s become unknown. I have followed your tutorial to a T. I am running windows seven with 6 gig's of ram ati 5850 and creative card. So what do you think?

Hope I don't upset the forum admins by posting a link here.

I would NEVER move the SXS directory!!!! The size reported by that directory is false! SXS files actually are mainly pointers to files in other locations... SXS stands for Windows Side By Side Assembly... Google that one....

I'm using the PartedMagic method to secure erase my disk. I have a 256gb Patriot Torqx and it's
Been 4 hours and 30 minutes since I've started. How long is this going to take??? I'm wondering
if changing mobo AHCI to Compatibility Mode would have sped this thing up??!!! Would I hurt the
the SSD if I turned off the laptop and tried the Compatibility Mode method??? I'm using this on
a Lenovo T400 that has SATA II speeds so what am I doing wrong??!!
