Oh yeah! It would be great to have something near that. At least the movie covers instead of movie preview.

    @CJ Patriot Box Off:

First off, great product!! What is missing is a nicer and easier to navigate interface, customizable a plus (the above open source navigation seems like a good idea if you can offer it). It takes too many clicks to browse to the network and there is no feature to remember login password. I always get the prompt to enter password although I login already and played a movie. Also, is the default login Realtek_guest/Realtek_pw? If I create a user account using this combo, would it then eliminate the login prompt? Features like youtube, pandora and hulu will really add value to this product. I really hope to see these features in the near future. In the meantime, can you let us know the ETA and features on the next firmware release?

fix it from playing choppy on all video modes from 720p to 1080p.

i dont know why it plays choppy at random.

480i is fine. but wtf is 480i ??

    EDIT

even 480i is now chopping, i just did not test it enough.

480i is nonprogressive SD (standard definition).

I've only used this product for about a week and am impressed by what it can do. But there are things I do wish it did a little differently...

    1. Ability to access the PBO's USB-attached storage from a PC on the LAN. The ability to sit at the PBO with remote in hand and copy files from a LAN NAS is handy in a pinch, but not very efficient GUI-wise. I much prefer to sit at the PC where the files originate and push them down to the PBO all in one session. I know if I put a HDD in the PBO I can do this (after enabling Samba) but that's an extra bit of hardware I'd have to buy. I already own scads of USB drives.

    2. More compact use of screen real-estate when browsing files. Only seeing 6 filenames at a time (and only the first 20 or so characters of them) is very limiting and makes for very slow browsing. I disable preview anyway.. that's 2/3 of the screen that could be used for filenames. I know you're in a tough spot trying to satisfy everyone with different screen resolutions.. maybe an option somewhere for font size?

    3. Improved rewind. Currently rewind does no more than pause the file when I'm viewing a higher resolution video (MKV). I think it is having trouble seeking backward in these files. Maybe it's just my files, but this seems to be the case with a few different ones I've tried. This occurs both with LAN-based files and USB-based files (I haven't tried internal HDD files since I don't have one).

    4. Option for seeing a "still frame" of the video file when browsing like Youtube does (maybe 3 minutes in to be past the opening credits?) instead of only choosing between full motion preview or nothing.

    5. Immediate engagement of screensaver when playing music files (for those of us with Plasma sets subject to burn-in). Suggest this screensaver include the ID3 tag info so it can still be seen during playback (scroll it around the screen slowly or something).

    6. Ability to browse files sorted by creation date so I can find the ones most recently added to the drive I'm browsing. Those are almost always the ones I'm looking for.

All in all a very functional product, and very few bugs given it's new introduction. Hope you guys are making enough revenue to keep the updates coming...

    Question internal time

I'm struggling to determine why the date and time are even allowed to be set, since it doesn't seem to be displayed anywhere, so I guess my request is:

Please display the current date/time (perhaps on the far right side) of the status bar when I press 'display'.

As a second request, please also include the total running time of the playing file in the display bar, along with the current time position.

Third, if we can get the current time and date displayed, then can you please package ntpd so the box can just get it over the wire?

Finally, if you can get all that going, you may want to look into hwclock and/or the RTC. I can set the system time from the RTC, but I can't seem to set the RTC from the system time. Each iteration spins it differently until it overflows. (CAUTION, Y2K38 BUG PRESENT! )

    Code:
    # date
    Mon Dec 14 02:22:55 CST 2009
    # hwclock -r
    Sat Jul 9 08:32:16 2022 0.000000 seconds
    # hwclock -s
    # date
    Sat Jul 9 08:32:22 CST 2022

    # date
    Mon Dec 14 02:24:46 CST 2009
    # hwclock -r; hwclock -w; hwclock -r

Big one that should be in the firmware updates is a fix for the slow network problems.

I have had to go to my wired network connection to be able to watch even regular DVD movies over the network from the NAS. The wireless connection is so slow that it causes choppiness when playing them. This never happened on my netbook with wireless G so I didn't expect it to be a problem on the PBO.

The wired network doesn't seem to be very efficient either. Both connections appear to be running at about 25% of their rated speeds.

    My wishlist:

    1. Styled subtitles. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to return my PBO I just bought and go back to XBMC or MediaPortal because the PBO does not have support for styled subtitles.

    2. Ability to reset login credentials for a network share. For some reason (despite Guest being disabled) it thinks it has logged into my fileserver successfully, but can't access any of the shares. I was able to do it by setting up a specific shortcut, but this shouldn't be required.

    3. Disabling overscan by default. I just read about the zoom 0.9x, so I'll try that, but it should be possible to calibrate the output to the screen.

    4. Ability to force 1080p output. My 1366x768 TV gives me a better result if I send it a 1080p signal rather than a 720p signal. If there is such an option I haven't been able to find it.

    Default My Christmas Wish list

    1. Subtitles-easy on and off. I can't get them off once they are turned on and the subtitle menu box refuses to disappear at times.
    2. Menu-too cumbersome.Too slow. I feel like talking to a foreigner who does not understand English. The response is not what I always expect. Reaction to a pushed button on the remote is very slomo.
    3. Wireless-G dongle is way too slow. Have an N network with a D-link DIR-655 router and my two wireless computers in the house are not having any problems. The Box seems like a veritable slug on the G protocol. Useless for streaming.
    4. Firmware-I think I updated, but how can I tell? MKV still choppy. Should I convert them all to MP4? Think not.
    5. Wireless dongle-Patriot's dongle does not fit in the USB port in the back. Using data on a thumb drive is complicated by going to the back since the wireless adapter only fits on the front. Not very user friendly.

If this can be resolved I might not be looking for something that works. I am having second thoughts. The only reason I bought this box was my not wanting to continually burn disks. Streaming from the web works good on my computers, but the box can't even stream from my computer to where it is a good experience. I depend on subtitles because I have one dead ear and can't hear out of the other.
    So fix all that Patriot.
    Thanks for looking
    Udok
