True, all boxes have the earlier official version. Upgrading should be harmless (there is no reports of anyone bricking his unit due to an upgrade) and the best is its reversible (the official firmware can be reflashed) in case you notice an performance deterioration. Just remember to use a USB stick and not the HDD.

Hey Guys,
got a dilemma here... so I tried the new firmware and it came up with the format option, since I was able to backup the content on the drive I decided to go ahead with the format since I wanted the function of the BT and Samba... but after doing so the hard drive won't consistently work... the first time it is turned on after being off for a length of time it asks me to format and I say no and the hard drive doesn't show up (it has already been formatted with the new firmware at this point) so I repeat the process two or three times and after that it finally works without a problem... until it is turned off again for a length of time (a few minutes is all it needs to "forget" that the hard drive is fine)... any help would be great thanx

Did you flash with your HDD installed ?
if yes then ..
Remove the HDD, re-flash with the PBO with the beta once more (via USB).
Power up the PBO and run a file over the network or a flash drive.
Re-attach the HDD and reformat it when prompted.
if no then ..
trying using the HDD on your PC and see if it runs reliably.
well, actually I did flash with the drive in, and I never even thought that it might cause a problem... I have run WD diagnostics on it (its a western digital drive... the 640 GB 2.5") and the drive passed all of the diagnostic tests I ran on it, and the computer indicates no problems with it (other than it taking a really long time to format in windows, but that is not with the quick format option on) ... so far I don't have enough content to fill it and I have enough space elsewhere to back stuff up to... so I'm trying it as we speak (flashing it without the drive in... so far so good, I'll post any future problems if they arise
Well, no go... I flashed it without the hard drive in... then I played a tv show off a USB... then I turned it off... then I put the hard drive in... and to my surprise it worked right away... I shut it off for a few minutes, and when I came back the same format warning came up, and the hard drive wouldn't show up... after the 3rd reboot it still asks for a format... maybe I'll just have to live with it until the final releas... anybody have any ideas as to when that will be? although, if I were to flash it to the old firmware without the drive in would it go back to the way it was? should I just try to get the hard drive replaced anyway (I am still within plenty of warranty, its been just a little over a week)
