Patriot Xporter XT 8GB Denied?
Okay, so I have VISTA home premium 64-bit, and when I plug in my flash drive it asks me to search for a driver. I do it automatically and it says;
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
USB Mass Storage Device.
Access is denied."
So, how do I get Vista to allow the driver install? I have UAC turned off, and I am the only account and the admin account on my computer. Is there a way to download the necessary driver onto my desktop so I can run it as admin and install it? Usually I think that works, but I can't find the driver.
The flash drive doesn't even appear as a drive yet, so I am figuring it's because of the lack of drivers.
Is this a new build with new O/S format? Make sure you have all of your motherboard usb drivers installed.
(Even if it isn't) I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling all the applicable usb drivers. The drives should be Plug N Play and require no drivers for Vista.
Okay, so if it's plug and play, and it doesn't show up in my computer or my disk management area, but it shows up in my device manager with a yellow exclamation mark, does that mean it's broken? I don't understand why vista would say it found drivers and is denied access to install them then if they don't actually exist >_
All my USB drivers are up to date, and my motherboard is completely up to date.
Vista physically detects that the drive is there and that it is being plugged in. The yellow exclamation you're describing sounds like the motherboard is not synching the drive to be read with the O/S.

It's the same concept when trying to plug in the ethernet cable for internet when your LAN/ Ethernet drivers aren't installed.
It can be confilcting or corrupted drivers somewhere. You stated you have the latest drivers, but have you tried a control panel uninstall and reinstalling everything from included motherboard cd/dvd to make sure? Does the drive light up when plugged in?
If you leave an email address, I could send you a tool that might remedy the issue if it is a bad drive.

We deleted the item and reinserted the drive, but again it goes yellow.
I've tried it in my 2 other pcs, WinXP and Vista, and neither of them give any indication at all of recognising the USB stick. No messages, No drive letters, No Errors. Nada.
It looks to me like the device is broken.
Any advice please, before I try to dismantle it with a knife or something to see if a soldered joint has cracked or something ?
Hi Martyn White,
Please check the inbox of your registered email address. I have sent you a low level format tool that might fix the issue. If you purchased the drive a few months ago, it should be under warranty still and I would recommend not trying to fix anything internal yourself.
i'm having a similar issue, i know the drive works because ive plugged it into every other computer in my house and not had an issue, but my personal computer with vista 64 bit home premium wont accept it. it says its missing a driver, and because a driver doesn't exist it wont let me access it. if i were having USB driver issues where would i find the drivers to reinstall them? or is there something else i could do that is more simple
Check with your system or motherboard manufacturer. It normally comes on a cd/dvd that comes with the system/mobo or at the system/mobo website support & download section. Look for chipset, motherboard or usb drivers.
