Hi

There are several sites giving instructions for changing android 2.2 froyo so apps (apk files) install to the SD card by default rather than the system drive. The most popular method is to use the Android SDK and execute an adb shell command. I have also seen mention of several MoveSD apk apps on google play that can do this. Unfortunately I have not been able to get google play market app to connect on the Alpine.

http://www.bongizmo.com/blog/moving-all-android-apps-to-sdcard-apps2sd-froyo/

I believe this method will Not work on the Alpine but not sure.

Does anyone know an easy way to have the Alpine install apk apps to the SD card instead of the system drive. An even better way would be to have a SETTING menu option in the Alpine firmware to "Change Default Application Installation to SD card or System Drive" This should allow toggling as required. A more seamless way would be to have the Alpine automatically manage this for the user based on system space, but also allow manual override.

Thanks

Hi pageauc,

I was also unsuccessful with the installation of the google market on the PBO Alpine; fortunately I haven' t ran out of space on the system flash yet. As far as moving the apps to the SD Card I haven't try that yet; fortunately the matrix firmware is eventually suppose to be build on Android 2.3 which has the build-in capability to move app to the SD card, I do it all the time on my tablet.

in the meantime I'll let you know if I find anything.

Cheers !!!

Thanks snappy

Thanks for the heads up about Android 2.3. I am looking forward to testing the new firmware when it comes out. The matrix fw is too buggy right now eg keys, features, as well as wireless n300 support, so I have gone back to original fw for now. The one thing I miss with the Alpine is not being able to access it from the network via telnet or via drive shares. I use my original PBO like a slow NAS and add media from my other networked PC's. With the Alpine you have to unplug the external drive and connect to a PC in order to do file maintenance, Oh Well.

Look here (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?8534-Finding-apk-application-for-your-PBO-Alpine-(stock-firmware)&p=50967#post50967) to the new apps I just added; you will find a samba server that can be installed on the PBO Alpine that works great. You will need to root your PBO Alpine first however but that is very easy to do with Z4 root.

Anyhow once installed you will be able to see the PBO Alpine on your PC to transfer files.

Cheers!!!

I am having trouble with the samba app. It is saying password not set. I have checked and there does not seem to be a way to set a password. Maybe you can help me out. These are the steps I have taken.

Running or original fw
debug set to on
z4 root installed successfully
install samba successful. It is granted su and this can be seen in z4 app.
When I launch samba app it verifies successfully then after confirmation a "Password not set" message is displayed

Web instructions state that password can be set under settings but cannot find a password setting. Tried opening a terminal with superuser rights and issuing a passwd command but no luck.

Any Suggestions

I am not home right now so my help is limited but there is definitely an area to enter a password and username in the setting options. The user and password are specific to the samba server so there aren't any need to create a user thru terminal. I will look when I get home tonight and provide a better answer. Also you need an SD card inserted in the PBO Alpine or else the server will never start.

I can confirm that the Samba server works well.

Anyhow I'll get back to you later.

Cheers !!!

Hi pageauc,

I just looked and I am not sure how you can have missed the password and username options; there are the first two items in the Samba Server settings (Press menu button when you open Samba server). Those setting are available in the Samba server not the PBO Alpine or maybe I misunderstood what you were asking???? Anyhow username (SDCARD is the default) and password must be set before the Samba server can run.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks a Lot Snappy

Did not know that the menu button pulled up the configuration setup menu. It is now setup and working just fine. Now I know about the menu button it is probably used on other apps as well. I tried the Amazon Android App store and the application runs but needs some configuration changes in order to download apps. I was reading a setup for the blackberry playbook and believe some of the setup would apply to the Alpine.

In the mean time I was thinking of setting up a rudimentary Alpine App store with links to tested apps that run on the Alpine plus a few basic instructions. This samba app is a good example because it requires rooting plus setting up samba configuration.

Samba makes it much easier for transferring files from/to the Alpine from computers on my network. It can be a pain moving the SD card back and forth

Thanks very much.

Glad you got this working; by the way almost all Android apps have some kind of context menu when you enter the menu button; sometimes different menu depending which screen you are on within the same application.

Cheers!!!

I wrote this procedure to give more details for others who want to install SAMBA Filesharing

I downloade SDMove apt file from Android Lovers web site. This does not install on the stock firmware. No error messages so not sure why it fails. The Alpine is rooted so that should not be an issue. Will keep trying to see if anyone else has some advice to resolve the failed install but so far no luck.
