I'm going to buy NAS and Valkyrie looks a good choice for a very good price. I want to understand what is situation with printer support for Valkyrie. The list of supported printers (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?4842-ValkyrieSupported-Printers (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?4842-Valkyrie-Supported-Printers)) looks very limited. Is it really so bad?

Since I have Samsung CLP-510, I'm wondering if is it possible to use Valkyrie as print server for this printer or I need to get other print server? I can modify Valkyrie firmware, by adding drivers and/or editing configs, if it is necessary and if someone give me instructions.

But may be that the easiest way is to use print server capabilities of my router (TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, DD-WRT firmware).

The client computers use Windows XP (and possibly will use Windows 7), if it important.

Thanks in advance!

Like most Linux based NAS devices, the print server is CUPS. Printer support for the version built into the Valkyrie is limited, as the firmware originated in 2005. It supports more than shown, but low cost host based printers (like the CLP-510) are not gonna work particularly well. Samsung has a closed source driver for it, but its not going to run on the Valkyrie (the Valkyrie's CPU isnt the same kind found in a desktop).

Thank you for the explanation. Looks that support of printers using proprietary printing language is possible only if manufacturer provides a driver for it for particular OS (or publishes sources).

As I noticed, Javelin IS supporting Samsung CLP-510. How is it possible? As I know Javelin isn't Windows or MacOS based.

I'm not happy to buy three times more expensive Javelin instead of Valkyrie just to enable network printing. My other needs are very simple.

The javelin has a cpu that is ~3x more powerful, as well as a more modern version of Linux, as opposed to the Valkyries 5 year old OS. The printer support provided by the Javelin would be more generic than the Samsung driver, for example some features are unsupported.
