View Full Version : Finally bought my POB

So I finally bought the PBO. I just wanted to say that this little player is one of the better investments I have recently made. It reads pretty much everything I have thrown at it. The other unique thing is that HD movies that are streamed through the networks run flawlessly... The UI is very simple and user friendly.
Now I have one question about this unit.
I am a freak when it comes to modding things and I was just wondering what type of modding I am able to preform on this unit.
I know there is a forum for it but I would like someone to just summarize it for me. Also what is that option of "samba" or something like that in my settings.
Thank you very much!!

Hi there,
Welcome to the PBO forums,
I got your PM, though I hope you don't mind me replying here, may be others can find the info useful.
Hacking this box has matured over time, its now reduced to simple update similar to the official one.
True there is lots of info scattered over the forum but it all boils down to two main things:
- getting the box crossflashed (running firmware from other devices), this is now an all in one update operation, all the info you need and all the downloads you want are in a single post (check the "makeover" link in my signature below).
- adding extras to the official firmware, once more you don't need to go hunt bits and pieces all around the forum, its another single update operation, all the info you need and all the downloads you want are in a single post (check the "semi-official" link in my signature below).
That said, sh!t does happen, and (as with official updates) firmware upgrades might fail during the update process and mess up with your box. This might be an easy thing to fix (simply redoing all steps) and sometimes more involved work is needed (check the "unbrick for $5" link in my signature below, also a single all-in-one post).
I hope that answers you question,
btw, the SAMBA option in the setup menu is responsible for making your box visible over the network (so other machines can access the storage connected to your PBO). Its not responsible for your PBO seeing other machine on the network (the other way around), this feature is built in the firmware.

Have you considered doing the 4318 and making it plug and play like you did the IM build? That way its already all inclusive and just need to add whatever you want to an already installed system.

Since you're into modding it would be worth your effort to check out the Hardware Hacks links in Wigout's post (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3692). There's some very useful information there that could extend the life of your PBO.

I'm in the process of buying PBO #2 to replace the aging (both technology-size) Roku in the master BR. I've made the first one a sandbox (using it on the office LCD) but want to start using one for its intended purpose.
