I had a hard time trying to decribe PlayOn so I just took this from their site: "PlayOn is a software program that runs on your Windows PC, giving you access to a wide range of Internet content on your TV -- Hulu, Netflix (http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/bounce.php?afsrc=1&mid=14836937&url=http://www.netflix.com), YouTube, Amazon (http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/bounce.php?afsrc=1&mid=14836937&url=http://www.amazon.com/) VOD, and many others. To enjoy PlayOn, you need a networked PC, and a WiiIn BETA, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Moxi HD DVR, Netgear Digital Entertainer Live, or another supported device. PlayOn also enables you to stream your personal videos, photos and music from your PC to your Home Entertainment Center."
Usually runs 39.99 (most the time can find for 29.99)
Promo price: 19.99 promo goes through April...promo page: Link (http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/bounce.php?afsrc=1&mid=14836937&url=http://www.playon.tv/playon/lp/purchase/?prmcd=lifetime) Coupon Code LIFETIME
rumor has it PlayOn will start having all new customers in May buy a subscription. This promo is for their 1 time fee lifetime software, that still gets maintence and all.

Hmmm... found this just after the above.

PlayOn Premium is coming! We will release PlayOn Premium on July 15th, 2010. It will include: Comedy Central (including South Park), NHL, TV.com, MTV.com, VH1.com, and more. It will be sold as an annual subscription -- $39.99 for the first year and $19.99/year thereafter. Your subscription will entitle you to all new content services over the course of the year (and we plan to release a lot), as well as functionality improvements (including a greatly enhanced and integrated Plugin experience, Gold version of the Wii, and much more). We will also be releasing iPhone support for PlayOn Premium which may carry a small additional fee.
Starting on May 20, 2010, we will no longer sell PlayOn as a lifetime license for a single fee. We will start selling PlayOn as a subscription ($39.99 for the first year and $19.99/year thereafter) on May 20, 2010. Customers who purchase PlayOn on or after May 20,2010 will automatically receive PlayOn Premium upon its launch on July 15th, 2010.
We will continue to honor the lifetime licenses for those that purchased PlayOn prior to May 20, 2010 (which we are now calling PlayOn Basic). Your PlayOn Basic will continue to work with the existing non-beta content (Hulu, Netflix, CBS.com, ESPN.com, CNN.com, YouTube, MyMedia and Plugins) as well as Amazon VOD, MLB.tv, and Pandora. After July 15th, 2010, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report will no longer be supported in PlayOn Basic as these are being launched out of beta as part of the full Comedy Central integration in PlayOn Premium. PlayOn Base will continue to receive new features and development support, but no new content will be added into the core (though you can always add more plugins).

So you are basically paying $20 for a lifetime subscription of "(Hulu, Netflix, CBS.com, ESPN.com, CNN.com, YouTube, MyMedia and Plugins) as well as Amazon VOD, MLB.tv, and Pandora." Even with no possibility of expansion (which is clear wont happen) it not such a bad deal (IMHO)

Just for clarification - is this a premium service for the AC Ryan media player? ie do you need to have the AC Ryan PlayOn (firmware) to get this?
Or does "any compatible device" include PBO?

I use it with PBO.....works great. There is a 14 day free trial...give it a spin.

I jumped on the $20 Lifetime 'Basic' deal (from a heads-up on this forum) before the Basic Lifetime license/version was no longer available last month -- the Basic version has tons of plugins and scripts and a few new ones keep popping up occassionally

As a Basic owner I can get the premium version for $5 until sometime in July but after the 1st year it's $20 to renew it each year - I'm not sure if I will buy the 1st year of the Premium version (maybe) - but the $20 a year after that I definately have a problem with --- especially since all the free content out there is available, like Boxee (with the plugin/App, Navi-X) and XBMC and similar others

The PlayOn Premium is supposed to be $40 (plus $20 a year to renew) -- but it's showing up all over the net for $20 plus the renewal -- I think PlayOn may be having some issues selling this new "Premium" version - but maybe it's just their way to get it off the ground

What I think they will really have trouble with is getting the Premium subscribers to shell out the $20 yearly renewal fee since, as I mentioned, there's going to tons of free content available and it wouldn't surprise me to see them "adjust" the yearly renewal fee at some point

I'm going to purchase a Mini/SFF PC when Nvidias' new Ion 2 next-gen is more readily available in these types of small PCs here in the US and along with the PBO I'll have more local content and internet content than I'll have time to watch - and most likely tell the local cable TV company to *%#@-off (well maybe just tell them "good-bye") - and save a lot of $$ in the process - in some cases about 3 or 4 months of no cable tv bills will pay for a SFF-Mini PC

My $.02 on the subject

That was the point PlayON was Playing ON, if they are saving you $50~$100 cable fees per month, it wont feel that bad shelling out $1.67 in return.

Personally, I was only interested in their Justin TV (http://www.justin.tv/) plugin, which is currently broken and the probability will be if this ever gets fixed it will be for the premium subscribers (all the beta services for the basic subscriptions were terminated ..right?) .

Not sure about the beta services being terminated -- I just add a couple of scripts recently that I didn't notice before -- but they could have been available for a while

Justin TV is available in Boxee - I think in more than one location/plugin (I believe a lot of the "out of the USA" issues have been resolved too) -- I just tested it in the App Library and it seemed to be working fine

Agreed - the $1.67 a month is a drop in the bucket -- I guess my point was that most of the same content as it's added will most likely be free elsewhere - and I have the Lifetime Basic license that current subscribers can't get - so I guess that's another reason why personally the Premium yearly license doesn't make sense for me - but If I didn't have the Basic license, I'de probably be checking the Premium out a little closer - especially if they happen to adjust the yearly fee if and when they find they are having problems getting customers to anty-up

Is that the UPNP boxee or the desktop application boxee ?

It's the desktop app --- the only content Boxee currently serves via UPNP is your local content that has been added to the differnt libraries in Boxee (ie...Local content - Music - Video/Rips) - no internet content - most likely because they would never sell the Boxee Box when it's available (supposedly soon)

I'm running this and kicked my tv to the curb to the tune of 100 a month savings so 20 a yr isn't an issue at all and then I could still kick in the 10 a month for hulu to get 3 of the 4 major networks shows as they release and be way ahead. I also have been grabbing a lot of tvshows thru the torrent site snappy I think gave me and kinda feel stupid to have been paying so much money a month for 99% of what I never ever watched. This kind of stuff will eventually force them to offer you to pay for only the channels you want instead of all this bundled swill they push out to us all.

agreed 100% & I've dropped my dish network and do not miss it at all. I only have a netflix account now at $10 a month.
all the free plugins & scripts for playon are great too.

Wow, I too dropped Dish just recently after nearly 15 years with them lol ... I found we watched far more downloaded stuff than sat tv so it was a no-brainer. Plus we have the advantage of watching our shows in HD where our sat subscription was stuck on SD at an outrageous price that continually spiraled upward.

I don't know that the tier system currently in use will be replaced by packages based on viewer's choice, but that seems to be the only viable option left to the sat and cable companies if they want to compete with online content. Let's see how long it takes them to come to that realization.
