I back up my blu-ray movies with ripbot to mkv's with vobsub subtitles. When I have subtitles enabled, the PBO freezes and the screen blanks out. Has anyone had this experience with mkv files and vobsubs? Are .sub subtitles supported or would I need to convert to .srt?

I don't have problems with mkv + internal vobsub. You may try to move vobsub out of mkv (with Mkv MergeGUI in MKV Toolnix) and play the movie with/without the external vobsub (I'm not sure it's a idx/sub format or something else from bluray subtitle format ?) to see it's a valid vobsub or not.

The file plays fine with the subtitles disabled on the PBO. The file also plays fine on my computer with the subtitles enabled or disabled. I'll try external vobsubs with my mkv to see if it works. Thanks

Looks like muxing the mkv and .srt files converted from .sup allowed me to play the file with subtitles enabled. I was hoping to bypass the OCR stage but I guess that isn't happening.

You don't need to remux the files, just place the .srt in the same folder of the mkv with the following naming convention: movie.mkv, movie.lang1.srt, movie.lang2.srt ..

Just follow up:

You can do the same for .sub + .idx file. Make sure both files have the same name with the avi/mkv file.
