May want to work harder on support and firmware releases before losing any more customers. After the fan issue, QA issues, slow response to support, Bugs and lack of features with still no firmware fix, you have now lost another customer. Returning unit and switching to another brand. Just fyi that you need to step up the QA and support side before continuing to losing more.

Great .. :(
I was just finishing my rant here (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11865&postcount=89), which goes along with the unaddressed rant dated two weeks ago here (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10728&postcount=8), then I see this ..?! :(
I am really sorry to hear about that malthan, and I can totally see and understand your point, I really think Patriot should get their act together or there will be more and more dissatisfied customers. And with the typical 30 days no questions asked return period that most retailers have, I don't think Patriot will be happy with how things are ending up to. (despite their sincere efforts handling the fan and remote controller issues)
Partiot come on ...

I won't return the unit but I'm looking for a better brand. By the way, which one that you intend to buy? I currently has Realtek-cloned Asus O!Play, after few troubles at the beginning, Asus is speeding up its firmware upgrade now, meanwhile Patriot from very supportive position at the beginning becoming slow down in its support. I'm very grateful Patriot_CJ for his support in the first days but now he seems disappear...I also have WD HDTV (not Live), but interested in Xtreamer rather than WD TV Live, it has a very good support too...

looking towards popbox or similar possibly. Just going to hold off a month or so to see. One of the (of several) issues I have found is the non-auto switching of audio output from various types of media. Specifically, I have a large collection of music videos and find that 9 out of 10 of them the audio won't play (have to switch outputs constantly for each one). So in looking at a new unit, this will be towards top of list of must haves. Asus might be option given time.

Hi,
The "SPDIFF" auto detect audio stream is also the 1st of must have when my next purchase of another media player (not PBO for sure unless this issue is fixed). I can't even enjoy my large library of music video files due to this huge bug in the PBO. Let me know when you find one.

I don't think a few people returning their units would make a big difference to Patriot. What will make a BIG difference will be the word of mouth.
The PBO is a new product. As such many of the first buyers are techogeeks who, if the product was good, would recommend it to a bunch of other people. If issues don't get addressed soon enough a lot of said geeks will move on to another product and either not recommend or actively discourage people from buying PBOs. That is something Patriot will have to worry about.
Just my $0.02.

Hi,
Exactly !!! I already recommended 7 people (friends & co-workers) to purchase the PBO since I first bought it. But now, I am looking for another player that 'not necessary better' but at least doesn't have major issues with audio/video. At the time being, I'm not even recommend the PBO to any one else.

I must admit that I also recommended the PBO to many friends based on the statement in the firmware update note :
Note: Now support HDMI dual/ multi channel audio out, added language supports, Blu-Ray/ HDDVD ISO and minor fixes.
blu-ray ISO menu/ nav require bootcode flash
assuming that this would really work with the bootcode 0202.0018. Unfortunately this is not the case and bootcode update would not help to solve this issue. (http://patriotmemory.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11297&postcount=5)So I'm getting a little disappointed and stopped recommending this little box with such a high potential.
I really can understand that it may take longer than expected to release a final version fixing almost all open issues, but in this case I would expect to see another beta that at least shows the features already promised.
When will we see the next firmware update? To show early customers that things are in progress.

Yea, I pretty much remain silent about the PBO
My new Samsung TV I bought in order to enjoy the PBO more - still actively telling the world about it.
While I do have some grievances, I do enjoy my PBO.
I probably wont be looking to replace it because most of these are based on the same chipset anyway. Better the trouble I know than the new trouble I don't know.
It was a REAL RUDE AWAKENING that this product would require so much work on my part in order to be able to use it to it's full potential.
Now that I have it working, it is good for me (fan replacement pending) but I can't really recommend it widely. I would be stuck in endless tech support mode. I get more than enough of that already being one of the more computer literate among my friends and family.

Hey Friends,
don't be so disappoint with Patriot, maybee there needs so long time because there want to create a perfect firmware and add a lot of new features ...
maybee... :)
maybee not ...
I find the PBO is nearly perfect....
For this money here in europe you don't get another so good mediaplayer.
At moment i can live very good with the problems, and other players also have some.
If you want to have the perfect player you need to build your own Mediacenter-PC. But you don't get it for this price.

I confirm that , since i have bought mine , 3 of my friends have bought their too
all i would like to have is visualisations like winamp or wmp during mp3 playback and better cover support , and also ftp support
Maybe all will be supported by next new firm ?

Does the Asus let you put in an internal 2.5" HD? Does any other brand let you install one? Most of the ones I've seen only let you plug in USB devices, no internal storage.

Looks like the Asus o!play / Air is similar to PBO but with far better firmware support. I've been wanting to purchase a 2nd PBO and had been waiting for a firmware update prior to purchasing. I'm going o!play now due to better firmware support.
I'm really liking my PBO so far. I was expecting a lot of issues (handshaking over HDMI, loud fan, bad wireless, etc) but so far I haven't had any of those problems.
Still though, the firmware update requiring me to format my HDD is a non-starter. Since everything is working so far, I'm not upgrading the firmware until this issue is resolved (beta or not).
I'm also encouraging friends to look at all options out there. I can't solidly recommend the PBO until I see some of these glitches being worked on.
I remain cautiously optimistic that the firmware is being actively developed.

patriot answered my questions online in this forum and it didnt take 30 days...
though I agree the firmware needs to be updated, I can't expect an update or several over Christmas and New Years and I dont think anyone else could expect that either.
Firmware doesnt write itself just because you posted a rant in a forum. It takes time...
So far considering we're on beta firmware v 1.0 I'd say that unit is exceeding my expectations. After years of testing various set top boxes, I can tell you from my personal past experience that the units I've used with the first version of the firmware have almost no similarity after running firmware that's 10 or 20 revisions in.
Sonicview is a great example. We started using our unit as a basic receiver, no functionality and ended up with an HD PVR with time shifting by the final firmware release. Entire interface / GUI changed. amazing work by the programmers.
Give them time and stop your whining unless you're offering to help code for free.

If not . .then release the source code to community.

I just think everyone is growing frustrated. I remember when I was investigating my purchase of the PBO I found replies from Patriot in this forum, at avsfroums, and even at various web resellers web site. This greatly impressed me. Here was a company that got it. Respond to your customers quickly and honestly. Not all the replies were positive. If the PBO didn't do something, they said so. I came to this site and saw a beta firmware posted. Great. I think a great number of people were as impressed as I was, especially given the fact that this product was not a core product for Patriot.
I don't think anyone is expected daily firmware updates, or weekly. The latest is that they hope to release something in March. The key word is "hope".
I like my unit, at it does almost everything I would like it to do. Not thinking of replacing it. Just a bit disappointed that Patriot has turned out to be just like everyone else. Big on promises, short on delivery. I guess we really should not be surprised given the price point of the unit. If you go to some of the Westen Digital forums you will see similiar complaints about the Live unit.
It really is a shame because this unit really has a lot of potential.

On behalf of our support group, i would like to thank for the support and feedback we've been getting from every one.
As I have posted in the media player thread, we are working on a new firmware update and hopefully will announce by next month. There are a few bugs and fixes we try to get Realtek to fix.
To imporve our support and response time, please post any questions about products under appropriate forums or email us at support@patriotmem.com. Although we do have a lot of email traffic every day, so forum is probably the best bet for some immediate response.
I will also be implementing a new reward system here in the forums for people who help fellow forums members. Details will follow, so just heads up:).

I see this got removed from the media player support forum to the general question/comments area. Given the topic and discussion, it DOES belong back in the media player forum and not "hidden" from others. Especially after the comment of "please post any questions about products under appropriate forums...".
The discussion is in reference to the media player, but if you reread the first several posts, you will see that since the postings were in the appropriate forum of "media player", it was not needed to point this out. Now, if someone were to visit the genera question/comment area and read this posting, they will not have an understanding of what is being discussed.
As far as the firmware update and "hopefully will be announced by next month", it looks like what most people are wanting is status updates and not be left in the dark as to when/if it may be coming. Even simple "we are still working on the firmware release, taking more time that we thought, but believe everyone will be happy with it" postings periodically, while not that informative, do give a comforting feedback to endusers that Patriot is taking an active step/role in moving forward. It is that feedback and company involvement and customer interaction that drove many to Patriot. It is also now that lack of involvement that people are becoming unhappy with.

Well, so now we have a word from CJ about having new firmware for next month. Sounds good. Still have to see if it will happen. Being optimistic, most of time, I am glad to have some kind of hope. But I think CJ and the Patriot gang should put a planned roadmap of firmware on the firmware forum thread. Then there will be less ranting, and some irritated customers might feel a bit more relaxed. This will save some face. They don't need to keep that as dead lines, I am in the IT industry and know the cool sound a deadline make when it swooshes past you. But it will give us an indication of progress and some kind of hope for recommending it again...

Last night I found the media player section at avsforums.com. There is a large thread dedicated to our PBO. There is some info there not found here and vice-versa but mostly the same info.
What I also noticed was an abundance of threads and posts dealing with a myriad of same and similar problems with each and every brand of media player out there. Given that most of these are based upon the same Realteck chipset this is no great surprise. Some of this stuff has to be addressed by Realteck.
As for firmware, given that updates require HDD reformat I really don't care to see a lot of incremental beta updates that may or may not be satisfactory. IMO its better to wait a few more weeks for a solid release (beta or final).
As for priority, I would like to see fixes for actual working issues before improvements to the GUI. It may look nicer but I still do not have HD DVD and Blue Ray DVD .iso working (menu support)...what happened to the bootcode flash instructions???
A pretty GUI does not make the player work any better!

why should they do this?
You really should have more faith in the open source community. Let me give you one example, ever wondered why a half baked cheap media player like the WDTV lasted in the market for so long ?!, once the source code was released the open source community released batches that were never claimed by WD for this product : interface (skins, jukeboxes ..) even extra functionality (Wired LAN via USB, Optical Disc drive via USB ..) with ZERO costs to WD. Even better, all batched units are automatically out of warranty .. so that just meant more units to sell and less units to worry about.
That said, almost any written compiled piece of code can be decompiled (with arbitrary amount of effort) to the original source code (there is even parts of the of the Realtek SDK already available online) but why would people waste so much time doing something that is clearly illegal ? releasing the source code for *most* devices to the open source community is like printing money (given the hardware has enough potentials).
I will also be implementing a new reward system here in the forums for people who help fellow forums members. Details will follow, so just heads up:).
Bring it on Patriot ;)

Man, its good to have you back, I was under the impression that you will be no longer affiliated with the PBO, given that you returned the box. Nice catch I was just wondering where that thread disappeared.
I was the one that moved it. I assure you it wasn't an attempt to "hide" anything.
Thanks Patriot_Ben, its just that sometimes typical moderation actions (like thread renaming, moving, unstickying) can get easily misunderstood by the paranoid users given the irritation surrounding this thread. Also the fact that you are logged in as a guest so there is no way for users to contact you regarding moderation issues on this forum.
Well, so now we have a word from CJ about having new firmware for next month. Sounds good. Still have to see if it will happen.
I would be pleasently surprised if it is delivered, the point is its now clear to everyone that both P01/P02 were Realtek demo firmware that had minimum involvement on Patriot side (need more proof here you are (http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/B002LTRCRW-3.jpg) and this is a GUI from yet another player with the same chipset and not a PBO clone, notice how the screen has convenient display of the available remote buttons for that screen, that was a customization that they did for their lucky cusomters ).
I hope once Patriot starts taking matters in their own hands we would see actual beta testers for the beta firmware (weren't all the forum users beta testers for the P02 .. yet nothing they reported got fixed), and more usage of the free code that some expertise are providing here (the SAMBA USB Storage code and the NFS shortcut code that should have been incorporated in the PBO release with the appropriate polishing).
This community is one of the strongest in media players communities (just check the "support_replies" to "user_replies" ratio to realize that the community is doing an excellent job supporting its members). Patriot should make use of this golden opportunity of getting free feedback, tips and support request resolutions and they should certainly build on top of that.
As for priority, I would like to see fixes for actual working issues before improvements to the GUI. It may look nicer but I still do not have HD DVD and Blue Ray DVD .iso working (menu support)...what happened to the bootcode flash instructions???
outatouch0, I think there are questions that are so hot, it seems they evaporate the moment they are posted, so no one has the chance to address them ..

I have the Asus O!Play. Great unit. I also had the PBO (many times in fact). The BO is a far better player. I would still be using it if it were silent. I just couldn't stand the fan, but that really is just me.
I also tried the WDTV Live but subtitle support was awful. They also had firmware issues. The WDTV Live did have the nice property of mounting USB drives on desktops of computers on your network. The Asus will not do that. It has a samba client so it's similar to a PBO with no hard drive.
The Boxee Box, PopBox, etc...will all be more expensive, not have as good subtitles support and be ad oriented at least in the PopBox case.
There is no ideal player. The BO is, apart from the noise issue, a great value and maybe the best in fact.

Yup. I ruled it out immediately when I heard that.
I haven't said this enough, but the subtitle handling on the PBO is really excellent. (Not perfect, mind you, but WAY better than I had any right to expect from a product in this price range).
I have my annoyances with the PBO, but I only have to press the subtitle button to feel great about owning it.

Yeah I ruled out WDTV Live due to subtitle support. I'm still on the fence with whether to purchase another PBO or go ASUS Air since they're about the same price. I would go PBO again if I knew I could get another $30 rebate but was told by email support I could not. Anybody able to get two $30 rebates?

You can get a $30 rebate on a package that includes the PBO and a 320 GB Hard Drive at NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=49576&vpn=BoxOffice320GB&manufacture=Patriot&promoid=1084)
NCIX is reporting only one left at this price now. Better hurry if you want it! :)

Below is the fine print of the Canadian version of the rebate. Although it doesn't say "limit one per customer, one per household, one per address". Although "one per customer" might be expected (yet not stated), I am guessing if you can get someone else in the household to do the purchase and submit the rebate you should be fine.
"Rebate checks will be mailed to qualifying customers within 8-10 weeks of the postmark date on your mailed request. If you have questions about your submission, call 866-942-4682 or visit www.rebate-zone.com/patriot to review the status of your submission at any time. Your right to receive this rebate will not be earned unless you satisfy each of these Conditions of Acceptance. Your failure to satisfy each of these Conditions of Acceptance is a rejection of this rebate offer. Purchases from online auctions are not eligible. The Mail-in Rebate Offer Details section lists all qualifying products. This offer cannot be combined with any other Patriot Memory offer, unless specified in writing by Patriot Memory. This offer is available to all customers with mailing addresses in Canada only. Purchases made in or for delivery to other countries are not eligible.

Internal drive is not important to me. In fact I have PBO with internal drive, but the portable external hard drive is more flexible. I have 2 WD Passport 500GB which can moved around in my 3 media players.

Welcome the thread back to the correct forum! I thought Patriot just killed it because of few sensitive criticism. I still recommend my friends buying it rather other brand, especially when you consider the price. But we should look beyond one brand to see what others are doing with the same chipset... For example, The O!Play can jump 5 or 10 or 15...minutes rather than 2X, 4X, ...32X when you watch a 2-hour movies without chapters!

Hey,
I mean, is it just me or is no one else using a laptop hard drive in this thing?
I have a 250gb and a 320gb and it gets super hot, i don't care, but after a few hours of play and it reaches temperature max (will not get any hotter at this point) i see movies start to play choppy. and they play in random locations each time.
It could be from USB or from lan or from any of the diffrent drives i have.
I made NCIX give me a new one thinking this one is defective and still same $HIT.
I just think this cpu is undersized and/or the cooling is an issue.

Was the fan silent in both units? I used a 320gig 5400rpm notebook drive and it didn't get hot. Perhaps you are using the 7200rpm type? Shouldn't make that much of a difference though.
Too bad as I was about to order one from NCIX thinking that mt previous dealer had stock from a bad batch.

I am using a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue, the PBO does get slightly warn to the touch, but nothing that I find out of the ordinary. I will be posting in the working set-up thread, I just want to do further testing with my Brothers TVs and receiver first, as well as different types of media.

I'm using a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB. Box gets just a little warm, that's all. Media is fine even after hours of playing, and the fan at its loudest can only be heard if my audio system is off. Even then, it's hardly noticeable.

The PBO has the option, just hit the "GO TO" button on the remote and you can enter the time you wish to jump ahead.
Two major things that I need fixed for the PBO are the audio switching, it's getting REALLY tiresome to have to switch back and forth between RAW PCM and LPCM and the network slowness issues. Even with the wireless N adapter, watching any decent quality full sized DVD across the network is nearly impossible without stuttering.
There is a minor update I'd like to see, support for DVD/Optical drive via USB. I just got a spiffy widescreen TV and the PBO works GREAT on it (other than the minor overcropping issue) but my DVD player fails to display the proper aspect ratio. I could eliminate the DVD player that's being stupid and just use the PBO if it supported drives like this.

I knew that GO TO button, but you have to hit couples of times (at least 4 different buttons) to jump to the very specific time which you may not know what's going on between the jumps. With the O!Play, you repeatedly use the same arrow button to jump and scan along the movie line quickly. That's the different.

Does the Asus let you put in an internal 2.5" HD? Does any other brand let you install one? Most of the ones I've seen only let you plug in USB devices, no internal storage.
Here you are (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882438004) , 3.5"s and Component output as well ;)
BTW .. its another Realtek based one.

Seems identical to my MVix Ultio released 6 months ago. Means loud fan. Interesting that they just found that certain WD drives are incompatible....This has been an issue with drives disappearing in my Ultio.
I don't know about all of these Realtek based units that take a 3.5" drive. They all seem the same.

Would those be the new 4K sector drives? They're great in theory, but don't work in a lot of practical situations. Many NAS devices and hardware configurations aren't equipped to read these drives. It's not a fault of the unit as much as the drive being a little ahead of its time. They're not backwards-compatible in many cases.
