how about built in buffering in the next firmware release. would solve pretty much all playback issues provided you have a drive installed.
patriot staff? thoughts?

I agree, I don't know how anyone can build any kind of streaming application without some kind of buffering, my guess is it is using a bit of on board memory. If this is their limiting factoring, using the HDD for buffering should solve a lot of problems.

The box is so troulbesome to work my wife and kids will not use it
the gui and folders suck
much easier to use a pc you can just open one folder on a pc and click and play
I have a external hard drive on my network that i rip dvd movies to

Many posters have similar issues with the PBO's GUI (myself included). You might consider posting your specific suggestions for improvements in the Firmware Wishlist (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2099) sticky thread. If you're actually interested in seeing improvement vs just bashing the product, you might have better success if you provide more specific and constructive feedback than just saying "the gui and folders suck". You'll catch more bees with honey than vinegar.

i dont think anyone can expect or even hope for seamless playback of any sort when you rely solely on network speed for your playback robustness... throwing in a drive and adding some basic buffering to the firmware would eliminate all of the issues people are having regardless of wired / wireless g/ b . n connection.
i've thought this through as i've worked with the unit for the last 2 weeks... testing now using a repeater bridge connection ... even with that depending on the network load the image playback can still fall apart.
this is why we buffer... to take the stress and dependence off the connection quality... it's becoming more and more obvious to me every day I use the unit that this would be a fast, simple and instant fix for everyone.

Ability to use USB thumbdrive as buffer/GUI storage is fine by me!
Patriot needs to put most of their efforts towards making the GUI competitive with WD & Popcorn office and this product will become an amazing piece of hardware that every household should have.
I have had this product for 1 week and have sold 5 friends on it just for easy of use, pricepoint & ability to play any format out there. The GUI is the main disadvantage.

USB would be like a readyboost for the PBO, and I'd love that.

well I have already done that in the firmware wish list I got mine early and I am waiting on a firmware I loaded the beta fiirmware and it has bugs the 1080p seems to blink every 15 sec's
Patriot is like doing nothing give us a real firmware update like my hdhome run tuner they updtae monthly its a great device

a gui is just window dressing .. buffering & other real changes to the firmware are needed to make this product function .. gui is useless if you can't reliably playback

I have had my Box Office for a week now and have not had any play back issues. I am playing .AVIs I create myself from an internal HD, but this is the only reason I got the Box Office. I wanted a HTPC replacement, something very small, self contained and uses less energy than running a PC, and the Box Office far surpasses my expectations. I use AutoGK with Quality set to 80%, audio set to original, and auto width with Xvid codec (default codec).

Try using a wireless network or some really high quality files on wired network.

Are 20 gig mkv files ripped from blue ray disk high quality over 10/100 wired network to a 73" mitsubishi? Mine plays just about everything very well with no studdering or problems at all.

that's great, but the fact remains that people are connecting to this unit with many different types of networks, with all sorts of speeds... dat's why they invented buffering...

I've had my PBO for well over a month and I have playback issues when using the wireless but no problems when using the 10/100 wired network.
This happens only on larger videos like when I stream the full DVD of Ghost in the Shell 2 across the network from the NAS. Wireless on the netbook works fine, wired on the PBO works fine but wireless does not.
Most of my stuff is "older" and ripped as a single CD xvid avi but as I get newer equipment, I've been increasing the quality of the audio and video of the source media to match and the PBO hits a point where it just doesn't quite do it over the wireless.
I purchased a Wireless N USB adapter recently and tried it last night. Hooked up and worked right away but it still had the stuttering issue.
