I have one big problem. My HDMI picture is perfect...but no sound. If I use the old school red/white/yellow connectors - audio and video work fine. What's up with HDMI? My cable is perfect. I have no sound...can anyone help?

Try to power off from the back and power back on. I think Patriot should step in and resolve issue with handshaking between the unit and the tv. I often have this problem when power on/off with remote. Signal fall back to HDMI Auto, 480p almost everytime and lose sound. Can not change to any thing else. I often compare and test with my WD HD TV and there no issue with HDMI there. By the way my TV is a Sharp Aquos 1080p Full HD.

Is your audio set to hdmi raw? That might be the reason.

I have tried both HDMI audio settings and since it is hooked up to my Sharp 1080 HD TV directly thru HDMI - it makes no sence that it does not work. As I said the old school yellow/red/white work fine and the files play perfectly on my computer.

Have you considered flashing your firmware up to the beta version? In the firmware post (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2131), it mentions:
"ES-51-283G-PCMPBO25-P02
Note: Now support HDMI dual/ multi channel audio out"
Not sure you *have* to have the beta (P02) version to get audio via HDMI but it probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade anyway. The beta fixes some 1080p playback performance so that might be worth it even if it doesn't fix your audio problem.

I am not stupid. I was in the consumer electronics industry for 15 years and the computer business for 5. I am very good at this sort of thing. I have tried everything and I have HDMI video that is perfect - when I use the yellow/red/white rca cables everything works perfectly (which means the audio has been recorded) ... but on HDMI I get video and no audio. I have installed the beta firmware and tried EVERY setting possible. Still no sound. Maybe my unit is defective? Any more new thoughts?

Ignoring the attitude, it may not be the PBO. Some Sharp HD TVs require a specific input to allow HDMI audio, and/or a specific audio setting thru the TV settings menu. Checking the TV user manual might show this to be the answer.

Have you tried a new cable in order to rule out defective cable. Although unlikely, but it could so its better to rule that out first. Also have you tried under Options-->Output Selection--> change to 'Fixed' on the Sharp Aquos? Variable will result no sound from your TV speakers if you do not have a SPDIF out connected. Hope that helps!

Some sharp and toshiba tv must be "enable" hdmi audio on through the menu setup at TV,I think you better see your tv manual before to use your tv!!!

Ignoring the attitude, maybe it's not the PBO. Some Sharp HD TVs require the use of a specific input and/or meuu setting to produce audio thru HDMI. A check of the user manual might reveal this.

:(The step is bellow:
1. try to play .avi(other format is not allowed) file and HDMI From HDMI1 to HDMI2.
2. switch TV remoter to HDMI2.
3. My god. I can enjoy PBO now.
This is PBO TV Incompatibility issues. Maybe you can change TV or that the only way I know.
my TV is SONY KDL-40W5500. it has the same problem. :(

If you have the latest P02 firmware then Partriot firmware is certainly based on an outdated Realtek SDK. Realtek provided an SDK to address the Sony W5500 compatibility issue several months ago (check Xtreamer/O!play firmware bugfix list)

Dear Assorror,
I don't understand. Can you tell me clearly. Thank you.
The incompatibility issue with Sony W5500 isn't PBO related, its Relatek (the chip inside the PBO) related, and its well known and documented with most media players using the same chip inside the PBO.
That said, several months ago Realtek has released a new SDK that fixes this compatibility issue, consequently those media player manufacturer released updated firmware that is based on this new SDK thus fixing the compatability problems their media players had with the Sony W5500 (check Xtreamer firmware release notes, and Asus O!Play firmware release notes).
If the Patriot latest firmware (currently P02) still has this compatibility issue, this would only mean that its based on an "earlier" "outdated" Realtek SDK which is strange considering that P02 was "officially" released pretty recently.
Hope its clearer now.

FOUND a way to fix HDMI NO SOUND ISSUE
1st) OFF your TV completely, even the power by pulling off the plug. (make sure the TV is not on Standby mode as well).
2nd) Start BoxOffice player and wait till it loads for roughly 30 secs
3rd) ON your tV and this should fix the sound issue.

I've just bought the box yesterday :). No sound when use HDMI connection with my Sharp Aquos (Tryed with other small LG tv and it works just fine). The picture is perfect in all cases.
I :
1. Upgraded fw on the box to the latest.
2. Upgraded fw on my tv set to the latest.
I tried lots of different procedures that are mentioned in this thread. In some cases, when I switch to 480P, I got sound, but when switch back to other VIDEO  modes or move to other movies the sound got lost and nothing can bring it back after. :(
Could you please collaborate on this issue.
Once more I have the latest fw installed on both hw.
Will appreciate your input as I don't want to return this box back to the store.

All,
Thank you for the proposed solutions. Unfortunately nothing works. I tried several HDMI ports in my Sharp. They work perfectly with all other units(about 5 of them) that I have at home. All cables work just fine with these units as well. I suspect there is a problem with the BO and it goes back to store. Will try Acer...
Thank you one more time for all your help. You all are wonderful.

I have this same issue of no Audio via HDMI
with none of the solutions set out here working.
ANY IDEAS PEOPLE?
PBO is -61R3
Bootup 27
My TV is:
Insignia 46" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV** (NS-46E570A11)
Okay so how do I get audio to work through the HDMI
I am direct connected to my HDTV
I have tried each of the audio outputs and settings
I have changed all cables and hdmi ports to the tv
All my other devices work through the HDMI ports and have audio
Also tried powering down, unplug and restart in differing variations, with no luck
Always have goo video and no audio
SO , What can I do? is there a problem here or What ?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

First make sure your audio output is set to HDMI (try RAW and other HDMI combinations).
Next, try RCA stereo output see if you have any audio out of that (file might be the problem or the PBO might be faulty).
If that goes fine, your next bet is to try the box on another TV if possible to rule out a faulty PBO.
If that worked fine and its indeed a compatibility problem, then you can try different firmwares and see if any fixes your problem.
If all fails, you can send analogue audio to your TV along with video over HDMI, most TVs have that option you will find a stereo on the back of the TV beside of the HDMI inputs, and a setting in the TV menus to enable/disable analogue audio for that HDMI port.
Best of luck,
kudabird

OK, so setting aside HDMI handshaking, for those that have their PBO conencted to TV, have you considered that the reason you've got no sound could be due to there not being a suitable decoder in the TV? If your TV lacks a decoder for DD, DTS etc that is in your source, then you will have no sound. Connect your HDMI to a suitable Amp with decode capability. If your TV lacks decoding and you must connect your PBO to the TV for audio then you're likely going to have to use down-mixed 2 channel analog.

BUT: I have tried alternate files for audio , no go
I have tried all variations of hdmi and audio selections on the PBO , no go
I am unable to select analog audio with hdmi video on this tv

So what firmware would you suggest?

PBO ver. -61R3

Well thank you for all the help aasoror and kudabird,
Through elimination and your suggestions, I have repaired the problem.
It was a combination of the firmware 61rev3 problem , replaced with bootup 61 rev1
and an update for firmware from insignia for the tv just bought.
so new/old firmware for PBO CORE and Insignia were needed
AUdio now concurrent with the HDMI video ,,in all 4 HDMI ports on the TV.
thaks again, It may have taken 12hrs or so, installation of a second browser on my mac9 insignia downloads aren't working with Safari for
some reason, the tech couldn't say) to fully rectify but now all is working as I believe it should.

so can you verify because you have changed two variables concurrently.
Would P61R1 work with your older TV firmware ?
Would P61R3 work with your newer TV firmware ?
I just want to verify that there is indeed compatibility lost going from P61R1 to P61R3.

To Verify:
P61R3 does not work in any manner.
P61R1 works only with newer TV Firmware.
( that is P61R2 AND P61R3 HAVE BEEN REMOVED from patriot site due to difficulties and the only P61 remaining today on their site is listed as P61 Bootcode for 18 or higher, and downloads as {BETA-BC18-61-IMS}). And this is the one that works with the new TV firmware.
I hope that is clear, now.
and thanks again, couldn't have done it without you .

Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie, and I have the same problem.
Please, advise me for help.
I have a brand new PBO and 3 TV's.
If I connect PBO to SAMSUNG LED TV HDMI - all ok.
If I connect PBO to Lexibook TV HDMI - all ok.
If I connect PBO to Philips 19PFL4322/10 - I have no sound.
Unfortunately, Philips TV has no AUDIO settings.
Tried to use latest firmware (BETA-BC18-61-IMS) from patriot WEB site download area - no luck.
The composite signal works on ALL TVs including Philips.
Of course, sound level on TV is ~50% and on PBO is 100%.
Using the SAME HDMI cable (revision 1.3, came with PBO in the box).
Anyone any comments?
Many thanks in advance,
Tigran.

from my experience working through this on the insignia, read samsung =,
I would say you need to boot new firmware to the phillips tv.
I had the no audio on my tv and it was a combo problem of the tv firmware being out of date , and the PBO firmware conflicting(the PBO beta update didn't work and I had to install an older version , which fixed everything up).
so hope this helps

But how can I change the firmware in my TV since it lacks ethernet and there's no USB.
And unfortunately it only has 1 (one) HDMI input.

you will have to check out the phillips site for the particular tv you have to see if it can be upgrade. Otherwise you will have to get the requirements and find a patch for the PBO that matches. For instance some of the older tv's may have HDMI 1.2 cable requirements.

I've tried to google the web and I didn't find any information on firmware update of my Philips TV.
So what is the next step:
1. try HDMI 1.2 cable
2. try older PBO firmware
or both simultaneously?

First, Thanks to all of you and all your posts and efforts in this forum! :)
Well... here we go...
Bought another HDMI cable for ~10$ with golden edges and ferrite. No changes.
Downgraded to the firmware P53 and the HDMI sound came up. With both cables. Yeehhaaa... [I was pretty happy here]
Downgraded to P02 firmware (to get aasoror's MegaPack P61). This firmware scared sh!t out of me... hanged up with "Cant Boot From HDD" and that's it. After a while it started to re-flash itself again. Booted OK. [fooouuuh...]
Flashed with aasoror's MegaPack - no HDMI sound. :(
Reflashed back P53. HDMI works perfectly with video and audio.
BTW. The Bootcode is 27 (if that matters).
In total - with P53 now I have HDMI sound, but I've lost new menu and several features I liked. Now I'm thinking of trying ACRyan firmware... any comments and how-tos on that? ;)

Yes, I think this was reported before (very disappointing) that you lose some compatibility on the IMS and later firmwares.
You can try ACRBO (pre and post GUI 2.0) or MedeBO, the upgrade is just like an official one, and all the download and resource links is on the wiki linked below.

ACRBO v7.4.4.2115 (2011/03/02) - no HDMI sound, very nice front end, very messy setup screen, could not get wifi to find any networks

My problem is "handshaking" on the hardware level (HDMI) between the devices. Like many other forum members mentioned, this is due to Realtek (main chip inside the unit) SDK.
I think that your problem is more like file format (codec) based since you do have sound using HDMI (at least on 1 audio/video file).

Latest ACRBO is based on a newer SDK.
Latest MedeBO is based on a similar SDK to P63.
So unfortunately there is nothing to be done :(
The very last trick is to add another device in between, have you considered an active HDMI switch ?

pass your files through "Media Info" and compare those that work fine with those that are problematic and see whats the difference in audio encoding.
Play with the "Audio settings" of the PBO and see if that fixes these files that doesn't work. (you need to stop and replay the file every time your change the settings).
