Firmware update fails - Torqx 128 GB

Hi,

I just got a Torqx 128 GB (model PFZ128GS25SSDR (http://www.patriotmemory.com/products/detailp.jsp?prodline=8&catid=21&prodgroupid=114&id=803&type=17), not M28) and am trying to update to the latest firmware before cloning my old drive. The firmware update utility detects the drive, goes through and erases "the NAND flash for rework", then seems to hang for a minute or so. Then it errors out with a "no response from drive".

See the attached screen shot for the exact error message.

I've tried two different SATA ports on the motherboard of the computer I'm using to update the firmware. (I actually want to use the drive in my laptop, but I don't have a way to connect the drive to a SATA port other than the primary drive connector, so that won't work for updating the firmware.)

Any ideas?

Mine that I just purchased came with the newest firmware, and I've seen others mention similar problems when trying to flash when the newest firmware is already installed. HDTune (info tab) is one free way to see which firmware is already installed: http://www.hdtune.com/

I'm RMA'ing the drive with Newegg. I was going back through the packaging and what looks like a surface-mount resistor was loose in there that fell out of the drive itself. :( That, plus the difficulty trying to flash, and I want to be sure I don't just have a defective drive. When I get the replacement I'll check the current firmware version before attempting to flash.

Wow that sucks. The drive would have never worked with a damaged surface mount resistor. I wonder if an extra one got in the case somehow?

Blame it on UPS. One time I order a case from Newegg and when UPS dropped it off the box (which was the retail box with a sticker) looked like someone had dropped it off a two story building, including a massive dent in the side panel. Since then I buy a lot more stuff at Frys Electronics. You'd be surprised but a lot of their items are the same as Newegg or are the same when you consider shipping (well you pay tax at Frys).

Some things are funny though. The 64GB Torqx's are the same price as Newegg, but the 128GB Torqxs are $60 more (+tax and SSD's get free shipping).

Yeah, loose discrete components falling out of a drive was a first for me. If I could have opened the case without voiding the warranty, I would've just soldered it back in. :)

Unfortunately where I am (Central Florida), there aren't any Fry's stores. :( Newegg didn't have any problem doing the RMA, so aside from the extra delay, it's no big deal.

I'm having the exact same problem. Any ideas on how to get past this without having to RMA it? Its Saturday!!

I did the RMA on mine and didn't have any problems with the replacement drive. Definitely the single best performance upgrade I've done for my laptop.

I *did* get a callback from Patriot's tech support (I posted here, called their phone support, sent email to support, etc. to cover all the bases) a day or two after my first post above.

The tech was very helpful, but also seemed to think the drive was defective. Turned out to be moot given I'd already done the RMA, with new drive on the way when I got the callback.

I figured it out! I attempted to install the firmware without the jumper and it took! It's working great now...
