I just bought a 16gb xporter xt today and when I got home and tried to use the thing it keeps telling me that its write protected.
Any idea how to turn this off and why it would come from the factory with write protection enabled?
Thank you!

Hi,
It's hard to explain why this happens if it's not related to the drive wearing down. It's quite random and sometimes it can just be attributed to electronic components and how the drive is being read during the initial plugin. Sometimes a flash drive will just be in 'shock mode' thus causing the error message.
Feel free to drop an e-mail address. As long as the drive can be read still, we might have a tool that'll fix your problem. ;) Otherwise your drive should be under warranty with us still.

For the sake of future search and retrieval, let me try to attach my question to this existing thread on a near-identical topic.
I have the same problem as the o.p.; i.e. my 32GB Xporter is suddenly "write-protected" (although there are still 10+ GB free).
Although I can still read the drive, I am unable to add or delete files, or even format the entire drive.
I have attempted to implement a regedit fix published on another forum; so far without success. Therefore, I would be very interested in trying out the special "tool" that Ben mentioned earlier in this thread.
As far as I can remember I must have bought the drive around May 2008. So. I assume it is no longer under warranty. However, I love the drive for its capacity and speed; it has been a great help for my work.
Please help
